No i think the box needs taking out and stripping and reconditioning ,these older vehicles are not computer controled but mechanical controlled ,so check the vacumn pipe from gearbox to the inlet manifold for deteroration

My 98 Dodge Dakota gets stuck between 2nd and 3rd - Only way I can get it to shift to 3rd is shift to neutral and then back to drive. What could be causing this? Automatic vehicle

Your transmission may simply need a good flush. Then again a band inside the transmission may need to be ajusted or you may have a silinoid going out. I hope this helps you out.

Change the fluid and filter. If i remember correctly reverse and third gear share the same band and clutch pack. Some transmissions you could tighten the band on it.

I had a similar problem with a Dodge Caravan - On the Dodge, it's called limp mode, designed to protect the engine and tranny. If you can get the OBD-2 engine codes and look them up online you may find that the problem is elsewhere in the drivetrain. Not really an answer, but a solid suggestion of where to go from here....

When it shift from third gear to second gear it makes an abrupt shift. This problem is only from third to second gear, the other gears shift nice and quiet. The transmission is new only 3 months old.

Hopefully this Transmission is still under warranty?
If its a stick the shifter or schronizers could be the culprit. If the vehicle is an automatic, shift solenoid, shifter, problems in 2nd and 3rd circuitry (band or clutch not releasing properly ),manual shift valve .
Take it back to whom ever did the rebuild or transmission work tell them the problem .
Business is so demanding these days they will probably do the right thing.

My car just had the same problem and i bought a over-drive bypass plate from IPD and now it works just fine, just put it on yesterday. My overdrive solenoid was the problem. So, instead of paying $160 for a new one, i paid $40 for the bypass plate. I drive a 91 Volvo 940 Turbo with over 250K miles and now i have my overdrive back. I think if your overdrive relay was bad, the shift light would come on on the dashboard. So it may just be your solenoid. 2nd gear clutching

STOP Downshifting!
STOP Forcing gear change, watch the Engine RPMs and shift accordingly, HOMBRE's are as good as the operator's. Hombre's have dash shift indicators which illuminate when it's time to 'shift' and not before, This has nothing to do with gear oil either. If you've drained it, you best fill it immediately and make sure it's ample level. The heat these gears sustain in is inceredible, cooling lubricant is essential. Here's a tip, while engine is OFF, ignition key is engaged, dash is illuminated, depress clutch peddle, keep it depressed and walk through all gears with gear shift, shifting should be smooth and unpeded, including reverse. If resistance is experienced at one or more gears, gear alignment is off as a result of inproper gear shifting while driving. Continue to drive vehicle just shift slower until clutch needs replacement then do an entire drive shaft upgrade. It worth it, it's great truck.
