Question about 2005 Audi A4

The car turns over strong, but it cranks several times before it starts. It only happpens when the car is cold. The out side temperature does not matter. Roughly, if I drive the car and it sits for more than 3 hours it occurs. I have checked the battery as well as tried fuel additives. It is a 2005.5, 3.2, B7 chassis

    It does crank excessively, the cranks are fast and they continue until it fires up. To this point, it has always started, it just takes a some effort.

This seems to be normal for many cars however I understand your frustration. Does it crank over excessively? How may seconds goes by while cranking? Is it more aggravating to you than worry? Two things that may be occurring. Spark. Spark may be delayed by timing, or spark may be cold. Fuel pressure may be low or fuel system may need professional cleaning. Fuel or spark is the problem. Given the fact that is doesn't do this when it is hot leads me to believe that it is not camshaft position (timing), and it's doesn't seem to be fuel. I would concentrate on spark and ignition. A tune up may be in order with high performance plugs.

I have a 1986 ford ranger 2.3 ,starts fine cold,after warm up shuts off,after cool down 10-15 minutes it will crank.

I am part-time here at Fixya, so I may not be here to receive your answer to this question. Are you saying the truck does not turn over at all when it is hot or that it does turn over and then does not fire?

There are several temperature problems that can arise. The truck has an electric choke system which is called the "cold start routine". This makes the fuel charge richer until the temperature sensors detect higher operating temperatures. Then this system drops off. This leaves you with a leaner "run" system. Feedback from O2 sensors can adjust this into being "too lean" to run. The brain box makes the adjustments to the fuel delivery and timing systems.

The old fashion "coil" can fail when hot. But it usually takes more time for this to happen. You can have a bad relay for the ignition or fuel system too, which has reached a point when it works cold and then after carrying current it fails.

You can find out some Historic info about problems from a site called "about". Other than this, rewrite your problem and let someone know if the truck cranks or just does not fire.

engine temperature sensor ? On a cold start the sensor tells the ECU it's cold so the ECU adds more fuel until the engine is warm.

My BMW 520i starts up when cold but when it's warmed up and I turn engine off it won't start it's a 1997 straight six tiptronic whats causing this?

If the engine cranks but fails to fire, the car may be flooding due to a failed temperature sensor. There are several, but the most likely problem would be the water temperature sensor.
If the engine fails to crank when hot, the starter motor is failing and will need to be replaced.

The fact that you can still play the radio is not necessarily an indication that the battery is strong enough to crank the engine over. What do you hear when you turn the key to the crank position? Do the interior lights dim when you try to crank the engine?
How old is this battery? In climates with temperature extremes, about six years is all you can expect. In moderate climates (neither extreme cold or hot) 8 to 10 years.
Have you examined the battery posts to see if there is any sign of corrosion? Battery post corrosion is not always visible but usually it is.

My car wont start in the cold


There may be water mixed with your fuel. water + cold = frozen fuel. Get some HEET from a local gas station to remove water from your fuel during the cold months.

If your car is Diesel it maybe that the Glow Plugs are not working.

The majority of the time this is due to the "Cold Cranking Amps" in your battery. Most batteries are only good until it gets down to a certain temperature. After the temperature reaches or goes below the minimum temperature, the car isn't going to start. Generally speaking, the battery will tell you on it's sticker or label how many "Cold Cranking Amps" your battery has (aka CCA Rating), and what temperature is the minimum temperature the car will be able to start at. Most of the time, it's limited to 0*F.

Should be under the car, drivers side, just in front of rear wheel. Make sure and release the fuel pressure slowly when you take the lines loose.

1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Orvis 5.2L V8 will crank but not start.

Fuel delivery is influenced by engine temperature sensor. (sometimes a seperate unit from gauge sensor). Since you did not mention any performance problems after starting or on hot re-starts, that's where I'd look first!
