Question about 1997 Chevrolet K1500

2 Answers

Hi, My name is Hunter, Got in my truck its a 1997 chevy k1500. Its been sitting for a week in a parking lot. When I accelerate I hear a noise. It comes in around 13-15mph and is very random after that. It is a high pitched squeal almost. It almost sounds something like a fan belt with that tempo but a little different sound but not off bye much. Not sure if you need more info. Any ideas please.

I forgot to mention that i am 99.9 percent sure it is coming from the rear of the vehicle. Im not sure if there is a low brake pad indicator or something like that that scratches metal on metal to let you know. But it is very speradic. and high pitched.

Possible that it can be due to belt slippage , mainly the fan belt. Stop the engine and check the belt PLAY, if this is more remove the fitting bolts of the tensioner and adjust the tension of tehbelt to tighten it further.
Now if there is still noise coming out while it accelerates then the clutch, brakes or wheel bearings need to checked.

It will be better to have the vehicle jacked up and checked on both wheels for free movement , depress the brakes and see if they release soon after, if not remove and ovverhaul the brake pads/assembly

Died while driving

The issue is the injector pump, it is in the plenum for the intake manifold, the clunk noise is a cv or universal joint.

1997 expedition after i go over 40 miles engine is growling shifting but a littlle sluggish

I have had similar complaints that turned out to be the Idle Air Control (IAC) solenoid. The solenoid can get a little weak and air coming in through the intake at certain speeds can cause it to start vibrating. It sets off a moaning sound that resonates through the intake ducts and can get VERY loud. Sometimes it almost sounds like a fog horn.

If this is the type of noise you are hearing, replacing the IAC will fix it.

Other than that, the only suggestion I have is to see if you can get it to make the noise while the vehicle is sitting still. Slowly accelerate the engine speed with the vehicle stopped and the transmission PARK to see if it will make the noise. If the vehicle has to be moving to make the noise, then that eliminates several possibilities like the IAC, fan clutch, pullies, etc.....things that operate the same whether the vehicle is moving or sitting still.

I have a 1998 chevy 1500 with 90,000. Just noticed some rear end howling which has gotton louder. Drives fine other than the noise. You notice the noise more when your coasting verses when you are...

Diff can get noisy if the lube is low. Have you checked the level?
Noise can also indicate gear wear or a bearing problem but I can't hear that from here so you need a good tech (with lots of experience) to listen to it both on the road and with the vehicle up in the air.
If it's either a bearing or gear problem, though they can be rebuilt, parts are expensive and "setup" is precision work or it will quickly fail again. To save $ and time, I recommend replacing it with a complete end to end unit from a scrapyard.

With the truck in park--revving the motor---there is a whining sound ---seems to come from the breather area

Is it a new sound? Could be clogged filter or stuck accelerator assembly. If its running ok take to a local shop to lock down noise location.

Cv joint question

Stationary lock to lock turning, will not damage the CV joints, they are designed to turn in this manner, to test a CV joint to see if it has damage, go to an empty parking lot, stop the car, turn the steering wheel full left, accelerate kinda hard, do you hear a clicking or clunking noise? repeat in reverse and on the right hand side. Any noises and your CV joints may be worn, also inspect the CV boots for tears and leakage by turning full left and looking at the boot, then full right. Hope this helps, let me know

K1500 quits, but will restart

recheck that you have the spark plug wires in the correct order and you might have to fashion some kind of seal on that wire... perhaps silicone caulking to keep it from arcing... clean the connection first.

Please take a moment to rate this solution thanks
