The pcm (powertrain control module) monitors and controls all engine sensors. it also controls many other things including fuel pump, evap system, and tire monitors. its pretty much the heart of the whole car. all other modules like the TCM (transmission control module) and bcm(body control module) run through the pcm

SOURCE: changing out powertrain control module with identical used one

it depends on what vehicle it came off of. if it is off of the same vehicle you should be set but if it is off of a different vehicle it may not register with the ecm then you wil have to do a pcm relearn. but it should be really simple.

2006 wrench light is on

Powertrain Malfunction (Wrench) Warning Indicator (base instrument cluster)
The instrument cluster receives the powertrain status from the PCM over the high speed CAN. When a powertrain system concern is detected, the PCM sends the instrument cluster a command signal to illuminate the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator. If the 4WD control module detects a failure with the 4WD drive system, the 4WD control module sends a message to the instrument cluster over the CAN to illuminate the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator. On 4.6L engines, if the transmission control module (TCM) detects a failure with the transmission, the TCM sends a message to the instrument cluster over the CAN to illuminate the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator.
better have it checked !

Where is the vaccum modular for transmition on the mercury sable 1999 3.0 dohc

Doesn't have one . all electronically controlled . An it was a vacuum modulator valve.
Transaxle Electronic Control System Electronic System Description
Shift timing, shift feel (line pressure) and torque converter clutch control in the AX4S are controlled electronically by the powertrain control module (PCM) (12A650) and its input/output network. The transmission control is separate from the engine control strategy in the powertrain control module, although some of the input signals are shared. Some input signals come from the engine-related sensors, for example, mass air flow sensor (MAF sensor) (12B579) and engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT sensor) (12A648) to give the powertrain control module an idea of the load and climate under which the engine is operating. Some other inputs are based on driver inputs, such as accelerator pedal position which is related to the powertrain control module by the throttle position sensor (TP sensor) (9B989). Still other inputs are provided by the transaxle itself, from sensors such as the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) (9E731), transmission range (TR) sensor (controlled by the placement of the selector lever) and the transmission fluid temperature sensor. Using all of these input signals, the powertrain control module can determine when the time and conditions are right for a shift or torque converter clutch application. The powertrain control module can also determine the line pressure needed to optimize shift feel. To accomplish these functions, the powertrain control module controls five electronic solenoids - three on/off solenoids for shifting, one pulse-width modulate solenoid for torque converter clutch control and an electronic pressure control (EPC) solenoid for line pressure control.

Where is coolant sensor for gauge 4.0

the gauge gets its temp signal from the powertrain contol module via the can network the coolant sensor in the coolant rail at front of engine grey connector i think sends coolant temp signal to powertrain control module to be used for engine management purposes its then sent to instument pack is the engine running ok? if so not likely to be sensor you could try changing it more than likely its a instrument pack problem if the reads incorrect check the engine thermostat first of all easy job and a known issue with these v8 engines or the water pump loosing its impellor blades if its overheating that is

I recently did a scan on my engine and multiple code came up. Can you help me find out what they mean? (p01516, p2101, p2119, p2176)

The letter p stands for powertrain, codes are as follows:
1516-Throttle Actuator Control Module
2101-TAC Position Performance
2119-Throttle Closed Position Performance
2176-Minimum Throttle Position Not learned
All the codes pertain to the Throttle Actuator Contol Module. If you are having driveability issues, you may want to look into replacing the TAC.

U0140 Lost Communication With Body Control Module

This generic "U" trouble code applies to all car makers and indicates a problem between the PCM and the body control module. This is likely the result of a problem in the data link between the two modules.

Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. See: Verification Tests\Powertrain Verification Test
NO: Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module.
Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. See: Verification Tests\Powertrain Verification Test

Good luck.

I need to know how to locate the external regulator for the alternator and where it is

The alternator is reglated by the Powertrain Control Module. (PCM) The PCM is mounted right next to the Power Distribution Center, which is mounted right next to the battery in the engine compartment.
