Question about Dodge Ram 1500

Have a 99 1500 4x4 that i replaced the track bar and now the steering wheel is turned 1/4 of a tunn when going straight down the road. also the brakes feel like there is on power boost when stopping

When replacing track bar you should make sure steering wheel is where it needs to be if not it will not be straight, only solution is to re-do and align steering wheel, this is the only solution that I know of.

the return to the center on it's own is a result of the wheel alignment castor setting
if it set at zero or minus setting ( -1 degree) it has no action requiring it to return to center
To explain how it works --- the angle at which the king pin is set back ( positive degree) lowers the car
when turning a circle , the car is lifted up and loads up the king pin
when you let the wheel go that weight tries to fall down and that is the return to center position action
so to fix that problem , have a wheel alignment done and set at positive degrees ( normally around 1 1/2 degrees)
next problem is when you set with the wheels straight ahead there is no allowance for the camber of the road ( used to allow water run off in the rain) that means that if you position the wheel straight ahead when on flat ground then when driving down the road you will have the wheel slightly off center to allow for the car trying to run off the road from the road camber
it could also mean that if you have had suspension or steering work done that the steering was not centralized when the tie rod ends were adjusted for toe in adjustment and so the box /rack is now set slightly one way
it could also mean that the rear end is out of alignment and the vehicle is running sideways down the road ( crabbing)
the fix is to find yourself an accredited wheel alignment shop and have an alignment done properly starting by aligning the rear wheels first and then the front many will say not necessary but I can assure you that it is vital for tire wear and vehicle handling and if they don't want to do the job properly go somewhere else

What else can make front end shimmy besides tie rods?


basically everything can didnt specify type of vehicle so well go thru list first tires out of balance or under inflated and or oversized for vehicle ---hub /wheel bearing going bad ---upper or lower ball joint bad or damaged ----upper or lower control arm bushings---shocks/struts bad ---tie rods not properly installed ---idler arm bad or damaged --steering box/steering rack bad or damaged

I have trouble steering...the truck wanders over the road...i have replaced idler arms, pitman arm, center link, shocks, brakes, new tires, front end alignment, bearings...the right front tire sits...


when the steering wheel is centred, the front wheels should both point slightly inwards.
after the amount of parts changed, i would recommend that you get the tracking checked at a garage using the proper, calibrated measuring systems, to make sure that the steering is set up properly and safely.

I have a noise coming from the left side front wheel are. It is a rattle - took it to a local Toyota dealership who said it was the steering RAC well that was a $1000 mistake because the noise did not...


1) Take car to non dealer shops willing to give FREE opinion

2) Not likely you have a shock in Driver Front wheel, more likely a strut. Not likely strut needs to be replaced, but strut has a STRUT MOUNT (3 bolts of which can be seen when opening your hood) below this it is connected to STRUT BEARING which below it connects to UPPER SEAT OF STRUT or SPRING INSULATOR, that if loose will rattle. Usually, shops will not tighten, because to tighten is same labor as replace the parts. (Since you already dropped $1000 on ToyotaDealer, ask them to tighten FOR FREE since rattle is still there.)

3) There is a part called a "link," connects strut to stablizer bar, that if bushings are bad will rattle.
4) If stabilizer bar bushing(s) bad, will rattle early on but eventually clunking
5) Bad ball joint or tie rod can rattle as well

Never permit any shop to do expensive work on your car w/o first getting a second opinion somewhere else first. Do not tell second shop that you are there for a second opinion.

Shaking steering wheel at highway speed, no braking
1) Bad tire in front, bad tires in front, verify inflation of tires
2) Wheel alignment may be out
3) Front suspension parts (mentioned several above)

Highway speed to suddenly braking shakes steering wheel
1) Front brake rotors need to be inspected for warping
2) Test calipers on empty road at 40 mph, going straight on very LEVEL ROAD, hit brake pedal SOMEWHAT hard while barely touching steering wheel. If car jerks to one side, instead of braking straight on, you may have a caliper, ABS, or brake fluid pressure regulator off.
3) If brake rotors are warped, may as well replace front brake pads at same moment. Use ceramic.
4) When you drive on VERY LEVEL road on highway, steering wheel must be centered, let go lightly of steering wheel. Did car stay in middle of lane? No? Get a 4-wheel alignment.

Hi, to me the problem sounds like the track rod ends need replacing these are what connects the steering to the hub now when you turn the wheel the track rod ends push the hubs in the way you want to turn but what happens ball joint on the track rod end get play in it is it allows the wheels to turn slightly on their own left and right now once these have been replaced you will have no problems.
if the ball joints where to break you would lose control of the car as the steering wheel would not turn the wheels as instructed and they would be free to turn any way they liked, this would cause damage to the front wings and the hub costing a fortune to put right, but as it stands the track rod ends cost very little to buy and dont cost much to get replaced.

how ever this isnt the kind of job you can do yourself as you would need to get the tracking set up to ensure the wheels are driving in a strait line as their is adjusters that need to be set up after the track rod ends are fitted.

once you have the track rod ends ( tie rods also known as) fitted you will have no further problems and you will then be in full control of your vehicle it will feel a lot more responsive to your control so this needs doing sooner rather than later.

It road walks from side to side like the front end is loose. Have checked the steering gear box and tie rod ends and neither are loose.


make sure it is tracking right that is that the back tires are straight behind front tires try turning front wheels straight and get a string put it on the side of front tire and run it back to the rear tire string should be straight if not then the tracking is off

Lost control of steering/truck jerked to right


I think that when you hit the curb your distributer moved (all depending on the year of your truck). Go to a garage and have them check your timing with a timing light, or just for now you can do it by ear. Just make sure to tighten the hold down bracket with a 1\2 " wrench.

About your steering... I would check your ball joints, track bar, tie rods, pitman arm, and other steering components to see if there is any play. As for your steering jurking around, it could be a bad wheel bearing (or if it is cold where you live maybe your steering stabilizer seal is worn and some water got inside and froze causing a lack of steering).

93 Jeep Cherokee - steering problems


Check both front wheels with the steering wheel centered. One or both may appear to be pointing in the wrong direction slightly. Check both sleeves on the tie rod ends to make sure they are tight and not able to turn. (adjustment sleeves are slightly different than on most cars. One sleeve extends from the drivers side across the front and is about 21/2' long the other is shorter and is about 5" to the passenger side of the pitman arm on the steering box. If either moves, turn it 'till the wheels are fairly straight, tighten the bolts that are on the clamp around the slotted tube, and bring it to an alignment shop and have the toe in re-set.
A condition such as this is nothing to mess with. loss of steering is extremely dangerous.

Honestly, I've done enough suspension work to know that your problem probably lies in the tie-rod ends. If the hole that the pivot shaft comes out of is even the slightest bit oblong, you'll experience major play in the wheel as well as your steering wheel not returning to the proper position. Whats more, if your tie-rod ends get too worn, the pivot shaft can actually separate from the tie-rod while you're going down the road, causing you to lose ALL steering capability...I've had this happen to me before, and believe me, it's NO FUN AT ALL!!! If the tie-rodends aren't the problem, then you've probably got an issue with a damaged control arm or sub-frame. Hope this helps!!!
