On most newer vehicles the rev limiter is lower in park or neutral than in gear. i dont know why gm is doing this i just know that its normal. i dont know what year they started this but im guessing that is what your seeing. does it run fine in gear?

its hard to describe but no. it almost sounds like something is missing. I've reved the engine while idle before and its gone past 4 before.

i would check your mass airflow sensor. probably dirty. when it gets dirty your engine starves for fuel causing it to reduce the max rpm. do you have a aftermarket intake?

My 2002 dodge durango hits 4000 RPMs and bounces between 3000 and 4000 RPMs when I am in park and have the throttle held down. I replaced the cam sensor and it is still doing it.

this is your rev limiter stopping you from over reving engine causing internal damage. this is normal on all new vehicles. Don't know what year they started this but it goes back at least 16 yrs

Where do you add or check Pontiac Grand Am transmission fluid

THERE SHOULD BE A DIP STICK LOCATED UNDER THE HOOD CLEARLY MARKED TRANSMISSION. TO CHECK YOU NEED THE CAR RUNNING IN PARK OR NEUTRAL AND AT OPERATING TEMPERATURE WICH SHOULD BE AROUND 195 DEGREES. IF THE FLUID IS IN THE ADD CROSS SECTION THEN ADD ACCORDINGLY THE FLUID GOES IN THROUGH THE DIP STICK TUBE SO YOU WILL NEED A FUNNEL! GOOD LUCK

It's designed that why,so you don't damage it. It cuts off at around 3300 to 3500 in park and you say neutral.

When I press on the gas, the truck revs, and then lurches. Almost feels like being hit from the rear.

Is the engine running smoothly while in park or neutral, (RPMs not hesitating),?
If so then it is probably your transmission. The most obvious problem is low fluid. Make sure you follow the directions on the transmission dip stick when checking it, (check while running in idol),.
Check both the level and the color\smell. If it's dark or smells burnt it needs to be changed.
Beyond these you might have a bad torque converter or the transmission bands might need adjustment.

Check the fuel supply particularly the fuel filter and pump. Also, check the mass airflow sensor and check the engine intake system and hoses for vacuum leaks.
