Question about 1989 Ford F 150

1989 f150 4x4 clutch problem just replaced slave cyl and master cyl the clutch depressed will not let me put it in gear and it seems like u have to shove your foot thru the floor ?

I`ve seen this problem once before-it drove me to drinking! Check with your FORD dealer for any re-calls. I believe the problem may be in a weak fire-wall where the clutch master is fastened to. The Fire-wall actually cracks, therfore it flexes each time the pedal is depressed, therefore you cannot get any pedal travel...There was a re-call for this when I was fustrated with this problem (years ago)....

    I've had this problem too, but both times it was an aluminum bracket that supports the clutch pedal assembly. It will crack and the the whole assembly moves a little when you press the clutch. It makes it difficult to start as the truck thinks the clutch is not pushed in. Why the heck Ford didn't make these brackets out of steel instead of aluminum is beyond me. I am on my third bracket now. Really sick of buying these things. The only solutions seems to be 1) replace the bracket, or 2) drill holes on either side of the crack and pull the bracket together and splice a solid piece of medal over the crack thus adding support.

the most likely reason is either the clutch master cyl. needs to be replaced.or the.slave cyl. its mounted down on the transmation under the hood find the resivore for the clutch. check the fluid level.if its low , fill it back up , and look for signs of a leak
you will probally have to bleed out all of the air from the system.its done almost the same way as bleeding the brakes. Good Luck.

Started off with cluth sticking to floor.would have to pull clutch pedal back up with foot. truck would stick in gear. even with clutch fully depressed. seemed like spring had disconnected from clutch...


your clutch uses a hydraulic master and slave cylinder to disengage. It is likely that the slave has been leaking and the reservoir gone dry, thus allowing air into the system and reducing effectiveness. Check the clutch master cylinder reservoir (near the brake reservoir) fluid level. If low, also check the slave cylinder at the clutch for leakage. If leaking, replace the slave and bleed the system. 1987 Nissan PU, I replaced the master and slave clutch cyls. I bleed the system and there is no air in the lines but peddle does not get hard. Could the new master or slave cyl be bad? I see you can adjust...


The shaft should come all the way back, when the pedal is back, the master shaft should be adjusted so there is very little play in the pedal. But it needs some play. Make sure you can see the slave cylinder move when you depress the clutch pedal, you will need help to operate the pedal, while you look.

do this...

make sure the reservoir is full
engine off and pump the clutch pedal slowly about 5-10 times
while holding the pedal down have assistant open the bleeder on the master located in the trans

if you get a good squirt then your concern is the master
if no squirt then replace the slave

neither job is quick but the slave is 1/2 time

YOU NEED TO PULL THE TRANS AND REPLACE THE SLAVE CYL IF THE FLUID IS LEAKING AT ALL ONE WAY OR THE OTHER YOU WILL END UP REPLACING THE CLUTCH MASTER CYL BUT THIS TIME YOU NEED TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE SLAVE CYL AND APPLY PRESSURE TO IT HOLDING IT BACK WHILE SOMEONE PUMPS THE PEDAL AND YOU BLEED IT WORKS

Get the clutch slave cylinder and master cylinder looked at.One of the 2 has failed.If the pedal goes to the floor or is very loose,this is very likely the cause.Not an expensive fix.Hope this helps

Clutch reservoir is dry on my daughters 96 Eagle Talon the car will not go into any gear.How do I flush the reservoir?If I add oil could this solve the problem


Do not put oil in this system.It uses brake fluid in the reservoir.If the system doesn't have any fluid in it, there is a leak, and both the clutch master cyl and the clutch slave should be replaced. They both were used the same amount of times, and wear evenly. When you add fluid, the clutch master cyl compresses the fluid down the line/hose into the clutch slave cyl. This depresses the clutch fork/arm and disengages the clutch disc so the input shaft into the transmission stops moving, allowing the trans to be put into gear. LOOK FOR THE FLUID LEAKING TO ISOLATE THE PROBLEM. This is a closed system, and the fluid never gets used, unless there is a leak.

The brake fluid for the clutch runs out very quickly creating a clutch fail


From where it is running? Master cyl ? Cyl on the transmission? Hose?
That's an exhaustive list of choices. Replace whatever is leaking.

There is air in the system. The slave cylinder does provide pressure to return the pedal. Check to be sure that you have plenty of fluid in the master cylinder (clutch). Slowly work the pedal back and forth to try and remove air. (This usually works unless you have really lost all fluid. Once the air is remove depress the clutch while in gear. If it does not keep the car from moving then replace the slave and master cylinder. The parts are a little over $100. Hope this helps. I have one in the shop right now as a matter of fact...
