Fro mthe sound described you could have an exhaust leak or valve clatter. Check your oil also, this could cause noisy valves.

I just had the oil changed three weeks ago...maybe the messed up?

I had a smoke test done on my car October of 2010, and no leaks were found it ended up that I had to get a new fuel pump.

I had spark plugs and wires replaced in the spring of 2010...someone told me it could be my timing belt, my car is ten years old and I have never had belts and hoses replaced, could this be it?

Very likely could be. If the timing belt is covered in which it should be it is difficult to see without removing the cover. I have seen some timing belt manufacturers place a red coloring in the belt so when the belt gets worn and if the edges are fraying (which could very well be the card noise) you can see like a red dust around the front of the timing belt cover. This might not be the case with your belt but I am stating what I have encountered. It is not hard to take a peek behind the cover, only a bolt or few. Your mechanic can do this as well as yourself. If you have a worn timing belt it is very imperative that you get it replaced befor it breaks while driving as this can cause major internal engine damage.

Being 24 years old it could be a number of things:It may be a exhaust manifold gasket. It could be a noisy lifter. It may even be a spark jumping from a faulty spark plug wire.

It would depend on where the noise is coming from. A broken front hub lock can make that type of noise if the sound is coming from the front left or right side. If the sound is coming form the center of the truck I would suspect the drive chain in the transfer case is loose and hitting the inside of the case.
