There should be a vent line from the tank to the top of the fill tube. If the vent is blocked or kinked, it will act exactly as you describe.

Hey Timreys with the 1997 chrysler fuel problem.......Normally on chryslers and many others the problem you are having is caused by the CHARCOAL FUEL VENT VAPOR CANISTER...
You can remove one of the rubber hose's that connects to the canister...If small black beads of charcoal is present you know it is bad...The charcoal with spread throughout the fuel vent system...I have repaired these before ..same problem you have ..LEVEL 2 chrysler tech....
...Also check for mud dobber bee's nest in and or around fuel vent components...............
There is also another small filter and odd vent hose routing...If it is the canister bad you will have to blow compressed air through the complete vent system to clear all charcoal beads out of fuel ventelation system.
Normally it is the canister..................Hope this helps.........................................Metalpoet...............

First, the vent just goes back to the top of the fuel tank. It's there to allow air out while you fill the tank, otherwise the air inside the tank will build pressure. It's that pressure that's causing the fuel nozzle to shut off. They have a pressure sensor that's quite sensitive. The sensor shuts off the fuel when it senses pressure, and if the tank isn't allowing the air out, it will take quite a while to fill the tank.
I noted the comment about the charcoal from the evaporation system. Yes, there is charcoal in the canister, and yes, it can work loose and get into the fuel tank; however, that would more likely plug the fuel filter screen rather than cause problems filling the tank.
    Good luck, hope this helps.

I have the same problem putting gas in my 1997 Chrysler Cirrus 5.4 engine car. Funny twist, the check engine light is on and the car surges and slips out of gear. Except when the gas tank is at 2/3 tank and 1/3 tank, then the check engine light is off and car runs perfect. The code is P0756 or P0765 so I had the solenoid shift changed. it worked for about 2 mo. now same code and same issues. It's like a transmission issue one minute, gas pump or gas level sensor the next or seems like clogged fuel injectors. My mechanic said there was a tube in my tank pushed down like someone tried to siphon gas and left the tube, but maybe it's actually what you are talking about. Do you think this loose tube would cause the car to surge-like a the brakes are being applied when my foot is on the gas as 30-40 mpg? Or affect the transmission so it will only drive in 1 & 2nd gear? I hope someone has an answer that could make sense. Thanks

How do I replace a rear motor mount on 1997 Chrysler Cirrus?

Put a jack under the back of the frame and remove the rear frame bolts. Lower the jack enough to remove the mount. Don't go down to much as the steering linkage could come apart. This would be another problem you don't need.
