Here is the rule and GM's official stand, if the noise goes away after a few minutes of running that is ok, if it is loud all the time you have a problem, there are many blogs out there about these piston slap noises, I have one in my own car, a 96 Corvette, GM said not to worry it will not cause any damage, just annoying on a car that cost $48,000.

2001 azteck 49000 miles use very little once every

The 3.4L engine has special pistons that are designed to expand as the engine heats up. When the engine is cold, the pistons make a knocking sound that resembles lifter noise or piston slap. As long as the noise goes away after the engine warms up, don't sweat it; this is normal.

My 2000 GMC 2500 Sierra 2500 has lifter "clacking noises" and I want to change the lifters. How do I go about it?

Probably not lifters. Huge well documented issues with piston skirt slap in the vortec engines when cold. Pistons made at one location and blocks at another. Manufacturer will not make any repairs. So don't go there, you'll be wasting your time. Lots of documentations from both manufacture and owners of no damage noted after high mileage. Options are to live with it, let it warm first before driving or rebuild engine- bore one size and replace pistons with a better one with a coating on walls. Did one for a gentleman with 59,000 miles 3 years ago and he's totally happy. He could not live with the noise it was making. My Wifes 2000 Yukon has same problem. If you have a diesel.. not my area.
Good luck

Alfa 147 80000 miles on an 02 plate when warm the idling noise is louder for about 30 secs then dissapears doesn't happen when cold!

If in all other respects the engine seems to be fine, then it's most likely piston slap. It's a sign of a worn engine and the only cure is a rebuild, but in itself, piston slap is just an annoyance rather than a problem. The piston bores are tighter when the engine is cold and so the pistons are more tightly constrained and less able to slap.

But at 80k miles you really shouldn't have piston slap yet, even on an Alfa. I suggest that you take the car to an experienced mechanic to get the oil pressure checked: it could be that the oil pump is failing and if that goes completely you will be looking at a replacement engine due to consequential damage. Used Alfa 147's of that age are usually dirt cheap though, so if you do need a donor engine it may prove to be more cost effective to sell yours for spares and buy another 147.

Ive been told my car has piston slap is this bad

If that is true, it is bad. I would venture a guess that is not correct however. Your Isuzu is not that old and if it has been properly maintained, (especially oil changes, has not been overheated), then I assure you, this is not the case. How many miles does your vehicle have? What are the symptoms? I assume, some sort of tapping noise? If that is the case, the most common cause would be a hydrolic lifter not pumping up, not piston slap. Good Luck! I hope you find this to be very helpful.

2006 Impala, dealer negligence?

Not sure what you mean from a faint knocking. Faint Knocking noise refers to piston slap till the engine warms up and a Tapping noise refers to a noisy lifter, if it's a bad lifter. The noise would get louder as the engine's RPM rises. Most GM owners have the problem of Piston slap first thing in the morning when the engine is cold, it's common and was made that way. The tolerance clearance between the pistons and cylinder walls are quite large since the majority of people do not warm up there car, so as you get on the gas and the pistons expand to the right size and will not wear out the cylinder walls giving the engine a longer life. The side effect to this is piston slap till the piston expands, that's why they say that you just have to warm up the engine for 2 min and then drive. Personal I'm not one to get in and drive, I'll always warm up the engine enough to see the temperature gauge go up. My wife has a Montana with over 150.000 miles and no piston slap after the first oil changed. I found that adding some Lucas engine oil treatment and a can of Engine Restor every second oil change has kept the engine running smooth and quiet, And about 500 miles before the next oil change. I add a bottle of Marvel Mystery Oil, the Mystery oil is thinner and will clean out the internal oil journals to the crank shaft and lifters which would cause the noisy lifter if the oil passage ways are sludge up. The Mystery oil will also clean the Oil Pump Pick Up Screen, ensuring there is not oil restriction in your engine. I have a GMC jimmy with over 350.000 miles and engine still running 100% with this method of service. Good luck and if your due for an oil change soon, add the Marvel Oil and a few days later change the oil and filter and add a can of Engine Restor and some Lucas oil treatment. This should quiet down your engine and add a few more years to it's life. Keep me posted, be glad to answer any more questions you may have.

2001 HD 2500 6 Litre poor starting

if it`s burning some oil it probably needs new valve seats in the heads and it probably isnt piston slap noise but the rockers getting looser. If you have the heads redone make sure the push rods are cleaned and not damaged I`m sorry to say but that slap going away will only be temperary as it continues to where on the valve seats it will start again you did the right thing though by switching motor oil if you do make these repairs you might want to add something like prolong or slick 50 well hope this helped
