No. The light means there is a problem with a sensor for the transmission. Havevthe truck connected to a scan tool to find out which one. Some parts stores will do this free of charge.

2002 mercury moutianeer overdrive light blinking not shifting

I hate to say it but your transmission is probably soon to go out. Does it shift hard? How many miles are on the transmission? Was the transmission ever serviced? Take it to a trusted mechanic and have them look at it and ask if a flush will take care of it or if it needs rebuilt. Remember to make sure the mechanic is trustworthy. You could just do a flush and see if that fixes it but if you have a lot of miles on it a flush can cause more damage to the transmission.

While driving it looses power. Will stop car and put in park. Get out and check basics Oil etc and ok. Restart car no problem. Put in drive wont go. Put in reverse will go. Stop, put in park. Put in drive...

Sounds like there's a transmission problem there. Maybe try a transmission flush and fill to see if that solves the problem for about $100. If that doesn't solve the problem a transmission rebuild is probably the way to go to fix the problem.

That procedure is a lot more than the flush and fill, though.

Engine Coolant Light blinks constantly.

you put transmission fluid in your radiator? You should have antifreeze in your radiator. You could have a bad thermostat that's causing the car to over heat. Does your temp gauge read a high temperature?

Transmision

I worked for Ford for 6 years and if the od light comes on and blinks then you have a problem if it comes on solid and then turns itself off it could be a pressure issue in the transmission or as simple as the od light having a short in it. You need to remember this, If your transmission has more than 100k on it sometimes when you flush the transmission (service it) it will clean off the clutch plates so much on a high mileage vehicle that the trans will began to slip afterwards. If you service the trans yourself also know that just takeing the filter off and replaceing it doesn't do really any good because you will still have at least 8 quarts of old fluid that stays in your torque converter. Go by Auto Zone or Advance and get them to pull the code out of your computer for you, they will do this for free at most parts houses. Even if the light is not on the code will be stored in the computer of your vehicle. The code definition may help you decide on the direction to go from there. I hope this helps sorry if it is confusing, Roger

97 ford contour, 2.5 L, automatic transmission, OD light is blinking and is shifting rough in second gear. How long can I drive the car until it breaks down

The first thing you need to do is get the tranny power flushed.
And not the aerosol cans of flush you buy at the parts store.

Don't go to AAMCO either.

Certified transmission or a reputible service garage can do this. It averages about $160. The contour uses a CD4E series automatic 4 spd tranny. It has a history of overheating. It was used in the Contour, Mystique, Ford Escape, Ford Probe, Merc. Cougar, Mazda 626 and MX-6, and Mazda Tribute. all had the overheating problem that cooked the tranny fluid. They run hot.

The overdrive light starts blinking I bet when you drive it on the interstate at highway speeds for about 5 or more miles... then it shifts real hard (whiplash effect). Turn the car off and reset the transmission controller and the light stops, and it shifts normally... this doesn't fix the problem though.

Primary solution is to flush the tranny. You have to do this to save whatever life is left in the transmission clutch disk/packs.
The CD4E does not have a filter in the pan, but a screen. It's located on the front of the transmission, not the bottom. The pan is hard to get at and is easier to do if you remove the tranny from the car. .

As i said, have the tranny flushed, then, pick up a good "stacked fin" oil cooler from your parts store. They run about $70 for a good one. If you get the tube/fin ones, they average about $30 but only cool half as much for the area they take up.
You can get a used one out of the early model ford Explorers (92-94) with automatic transmissions. They run about $5 to $10 at the junk yard.

Find the Transmission cooling lines going into the radiator tank and using a mini pipe cutter, cut the return line that goes from the radiator back to the transmission about 6-12 inches back from the tank. Get some heavy duty rubber oil tubing from your auto parts store and divert the output line to the cooler and then back to the tubing that hooks to the transmission...
You can even add an externally mounted oil filter, like the one used for the engine, next to the cooler giving you a great way to maintain your transmission even longer. A filter you can change like your oil filter.

Either way, you'll cool the fluid properly and extend the life of your transmission. The blinking light is a warning, like your check engine light, to get you to check the transmission... ie... I'm running too hot!!!
Also, here's a web site with photo's on how to do this....

The overdrive light blinking means that a fault code has been stored in the computer, this can be for many different reasons. The car isn't actually turning overdrive on and off, it is just a way to alert you of a problem. Getting the computer scanned will provide a fault code eg. P(XXXX) if you can get this code I can help you further. -Jared

The O/D off light is flashing on digital dash it's 3.0 turbo auto 1988. as well as that light the differential warning light comes on once the car travels a short distance approx 1/2 mile. Also the speedo...

I have the same problem with my 95 Toyota T100. My O/D off light started flashing when my speedometer cable broke this week-end. I assume the electronic transmission is using the speed data to manage the overdrive.
Have your speedometer problem fixed and your flashing light will turn off.
