Question about Mercury Cougar

1 Answer

My high beams won't work and the high beam indicator in the dash won't come on when the switch is activated either. I've checked the fuses and replaced the turn signal/dimmer switch and they still don't work. Is the problem in the headlight switch? This is on a 2001 Mercury Cougar.

2010 impala high beams do not come on, light on dash comes on, replaced bulbs still don't work, checked all fuses, look good

High Beam Headlamp Operation
Battery voltage is applied at all times to the coil and switch sides of the HIGH BEAM PCB Relay located in the underhood fuse block. When the headlamp dimmer switch is placed in the high beam position, the headlamp dimmer switch signal circuit to the BCM is pulled low signaling the headlamp high beam request. In response to this signal, the BCM applies ground through the high beam relay control circuit energizing the high beam relay. With the high beam relay energized, battery voltage is applied through the switch side of the relay, the left and right high beam fuses, and the high beam supply voltage circuits illuminating the high beam headlamps. At the same time the BCM sends a GMLAN serial data message to the instrument panel cluster (IPC) requesting the IPC to illuminate the high beam indicator. Ground for the left headlamp is provided at G101 and the right headlamp at G100.

1999 Toyota Camry . Low beams work, but no high beam.

I would guess the switch on the steering column
is worn out, thus no high beam feature

That switch & that part of the lighting system has to be tested

Best if you have wiring diagrams & electrical skills

As with almost all folks that come to any web site, I assume
everyone ends up at a repair shop, because no one says otherwise

First of all are your headlights a double filament type headlight? If yes then I would suspect that a power wire to the high beams is broken or shorted. If your high beams are a separate set of lights from your regulars running lights then either the high beams headlights are missing. or has a broken power wire or shorted or...You could check the fuse box under your dash and under the hood of the car to see if you have a fuse for the high beam lights.

Well the high and low beam lamps use the same fuses, and the dimmer switch handles the ground circuit. So I would check the dimmer switch if both high beam bulbs are ok.

High beam indicator comes on with fog lights

Could your Mazda have daytime running lights? If you checked all fuses, did that include the three in the joint box?

There is an auto light-off control module that is central to all functions you describe. It is assumed that you would only turn on the fog lights with headlights on and set for high beam. If you set the headlight switch to LOW, the module closes the headlight relay to turn on the low beams. If you then turn the headlight switch to HIGH, the module turns on the high beams and allows you to turn on the FOG LIGHT switch, closing the fog light relay and turning on the fog lights. Since this sequence is not working, I suggest checking both high beam lamps as both could be burned out. Other possibilities are a defective headlight switch or the module

What would make the low beams work but not the high beams

low beams are for foggy situations.. there should be a button to turn on the fog lights ... unless it has a sensor

2001 Toyota Corolla high beam lights are not

Your switch must be working since your indicator is telling you when the high beams are on, so my guess is that your bulbs are faulty. The high beam part. They probably burnt out one at a time, so you didn't notice until the second one went. Change your bulbs, and see if that solves it. If not, let me know.

High beam headligts will not come on + no dash

Sounds like a bad switch to me. If it was a relay,it would not work period. Not to mention, the switch controls the dash lights too.

No high beams

Check ur fuses, then maybe ur bulbs are finished. Have they been replaced at all?

On the fuse cover, it usually tells u which fuse does what.

When u press the switch for the high beams, do u see the high beam indicator light up in the dash cluster? If so, highly doubt it's the switch.
