Question about 2002 Ford Mustang

1 Answer

I have a 2002 Ford Mustang Coupe. The Odometer keeps "going out" and the speedometer will jump when I get to 60-70 MPH. I have about 142,000 miles on the cars. Any suggestions?

Could be a fault in the gauge cluster, faulty wiring, or a faulty speed sensor. Check the speed sensor, sometimes known as VSS. Inspect the harness for corrosion and or broken prong.

The speed sensor might be bad. I used to own a 99 Mitsubishi Eclipse with the same symptons. The car will start, but will not pass the 1st or 2nd gear, the speedometer will be at 0. I replaced the speed sensor and all the problems went away.

there is not a fuse for just the speedo. Only possible fix is to remove the positive battery post for 30 minutes to reset the ecm/pcm. You probably fired the circuit though. Good luck.

Got a 97 mustang gt with a speedometer problem. everything works except the milege meters. Do have replace the whole speedometer cluster to fix it.

the speedometer odometer can be repaired, so a new unit is not required, contact your local Ford dealer to see who they use for Speedo repair, they don't do it at the shop.

My speedometer quit but the odometer still works (1998 F150) can you solve this

Usually it's the opposite. The speedometer works and the odomater and trip meter go inop. Most likely the speedometer assembly is bad. If the odometer is working you have a signal from the gray and black wire .

The gear for the odometer has broken. If you are mechanically inclined you should be able to replace the gear yourself. Google mustang odometer inop .You can buy the gear. Good luck.

Yes your speedometer, and odometer are controlled by your speed sensor.

Odometer and trip odometer stopped working. Speedometer works.

The problem is going to be a worn or broken odometer gear. You can purchase the gear at odometergears.com for $29.00 with the shipping. Follow their how to repair on the Mustang to help in the repair. I believe you will have just the worm gear to replace.

2005 Mustang Speedometer Issue

This is pretty common on the 2005 Mustangs, it's caused by failing stepper motors in the instrument cluster, they control the movement of the gauges. There's a guide on how to fix them here - 2005 Mustang speedometer problem
