1996 Ford Ranger 2.3L I'm coming up with DTC P1761 shift solenoid stuck in off position I know the shift solenoid is in the valve body but i don't know which on to replace any suggestions?

SOURCE: torque converter solenoid stuck off DTC

There is a solenoid switch that locks up your torque converter to get a 1:1 input for your transmission. This solenoid (or less likely its circuit) does not operate. You probably don't feel the difference in driveability but this definitely affects fuel mileage of the car... The solenoid for your particular application is available for about 60$ Canadian at NAPA auto parts here in Canada. Not too sure about USD$ and labour costs...

SOURCE: How do I replace the valve cover gaskets for a

The valve covers installed on the 3.0L engine incorporate integral (built in) gaskets which should last the life of the vehicle. Replacement gaskets are available if required.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the ignition wires from the spark plugs, but leave them attached to their wire looms.
  2. Remove the ignition wire separators from the rocker arm cover attaching bolt studs with the wires attached, then lay the wires out of the way.
  3. If the left hand cover is being removed, remove the throttle body assembly, the PCV valve and fuel injector harness stand-offs. If the right hand cover is being removed, remove the engine harness connectors, fuel injector harness stand-offs and air cleaner closure hose from the oil fill adapter.
  4. Using caution, slide a sharp thin blade knife between the cylinder head gasket surface and the valve cover gasket at the four RTV junctions. CUT ONLY THE RTV SEALER AND AVOID CUTTING THE INTEGRAL GASKET.
  5. Remove the integral gasket from the valve cover gasket channel. Note bolt/stud fasteners locations before removing gasket for correct installation. Clean gasket channel and remove any traces of RTV sealant.

To install:
  1. Align fastener holes, lay new gasket onto channel and install by hand. Install gasket to each fastener, seat fastener against cover and at the same time roll gasket around fastener collar. If installed correctly all fasteners will be secured by gasket and not fall out.
  2. Install valve cover to the engine, lightly oil all bolts and stud threads. Apply a bead of RTV sealant at the cylinder head to intake manifold rail step (two places per rail).
  3. Place the valve cover on the cylinder head and install attaching bolts and studs. Tighten the attaching bolts to specifications.

  1. Install all remaining components in reverse order of removal procedure. Connect the ignition wires to the spark plugs and reconnect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and run to normal operating temperature, then check for oil and vacuum leaks.

Your best bet would be to take your vehicle to a ASE certified professional . You do not have the tools to diagnose this or the information.
DTC P0753
The 1-2 shift solenoid (1-2 SS) valve controls transmission fluid pressure acting on the 1-2 shift valves to position the valves for the appropriate gear. The 1-2 SS valve is a normally-open exhaust valve located on the control valve body. A fused circuit supplies ignition voltage to the 1-2 SS valve. The PCM commands the solenoid ON or OFF by switching the ground path. When the 1-2 SS valve is commanded ON, the PCM senses low voltage. When the 1-2 SS valve is commanded OFF, the PCM senses high voltage. Refer to Shift Solenoid Valve State and Gear Ratio .
If the PCM detects a continuous open, short to ground or short to power in the 1-2 SS valve circuit, then DTC P0753 sets. DTC P0753 is a type B DTC.
DTC P0753 sets when one of the following conditions occurs for 5 seconds:
Condition 1 The PCM commands the solenoid ON and voltage feedback remains high, B+.
Condition 2 The PCM commands the solenoid OFF, and the voltage feedback remains low, 0 volts.

Troubleshooting p0761 1996 ford explorer


DTC P0761 indicates the third gear shift solenoid has an electrical malfunction. Most likely a bad solenoid. Shift Solenoid 3 is located inside the transmission on the main valve body.

DTC P0757 MAZDA - Shift Solenoid B Stuck On

The P0757 code is detected when the ECM has detected a mechanical fault with the solenoid energized, valve stuck on.

Shift solenoid valve B is turned ON or OFF by the Transmission Control Module (TCM) in response to signals sent from the park/neutral position (PNP) switch, vehicle speed and Engine Control Module (ECM) (throttle opening). Gears will then be shifted to the optimum position. When the a transmission solenoid is stuck on, in most cases the problem is not the electrical part of the solenoid; the problem is foreign material obstructing the mechanical function of the solenoid or the flow of the fluid through the transmission valve body. If the transmission fluid is very dirty, it is recommend changing the transmission fluid and if possible removing the transmission pan for further diagnosis. Excessive debris or metal particles on the transmission pan could be an indication that there is a transmission mechanical failure and that the transmission will need to be rebuilt or replaced.

DTC P0755 - Shift solenoid valve B
This warning is turned ON or OFF by the Transmission Control Module (TCM) in response to signals sent from the park/neutral position (PNP) switch, vehicle speed and Engine Control Module (ECM) (throttle opening). Gears will then be shifted to the optimum position.

The P0755 code is detected when TCM detects an improper voltage drop when it tries to operate the solenoid valve.

Symptoms:
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Transmission will not shift gears.

Possible causes:
- Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
- Faulty shift solenoid B valve
- Shift solenoid B valve harness or connectors
- Shift solenoid B valve circuit is open or shorted

When the a transmission solenoid is malfunction, in most cases the problem is not the electrical part of the solenoid; the problem is foreign material obstructing the mechanical function of the solenoid or the flow of the fluid through the transmission valve body. Shift Solenoid B Control Circuit High

Areas to check:
  • Short in shift solenoid valve No. 2 circuit
  • Shift solenoid valve No. 2
  • ECM

  • Check the shift solenoid valve No. 2 when DTC P0976 and P0977 is output.
  • Check harness and connector between ECM and shift solenoid valve No. 1 or No. 2.
To check the Shift Solenoid Valve No. 2:
  1. Jack up the vehicle.
  2. Remove the oil pan.
  3. Remove the shift solenoid valve No. 1 or No. 2.
CHECK:
  1. Measure the resistance between the solenoid connector terminal and the body ground. Standard: 11 - 15 W at 20°C (68°F)
  2. Connect the battery positive lead to the solenoid connector terminal and the battery negative lead to the solenoid body ground. Standard: Solenoid operation noise is produced. If not, Replace solenoid valve. If the Solenoid operation noise is produced, Check and replace the ECM.

I have a 96 explorer 4.0 4wd, failed emissions DTC codes P0125, P0756, P0340....are these costly repairs?


P0125 is Insufficient Coolant Temp For Closed Loop Fuel Control

P0756 is Shift Solenoid B Performance or Stuck Off
P0340 is Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction

The P0125 can probably be cleared by replacing the thermostat. That part is under $15.00
The P0340 can probably be cleared by replaceing the Cam position sensor. That part is about $25.00

The P0756 is a transmission issue and It will involve removing the fluid pan and taking out the valve body to get to the solenoid.

The thermostat and cam sensor should take about an hour of shop time to change so I would figure about $150.00 to $200.00..Depends on the shop and if there is a minumum charge. Some shops charge 4 hrs. min.

the trans issue may get involved so I don't really want to make a guess, but I would say less than $500.00, depends on what all is involved in getting to the solenoid and changing it.

your trans has lectronic controls to operate the shifting of your trans. If there is a defect, a fault code will be stored in the computer, called a DTC. You need to have someone with a scan tool check for the fault code. It is likely a solenoid that is not working or stuck.

Get the codes first. Autozone can run the test for free on engines, maybe trans codes too. Call your local Autozone or big parts store and ask them.

You may need your PCM, Powertrain Control Module reflashed by a Ford Dealer.
Try disconnecting your battery for 1/2 hour and then reconnect and see what happens. It will run a little rough and shfit hard until it relearns your engine/trans characteristics.
