Question about 1998 Ford F150 Regular Cab

I have a 1998 f-150 with a 4.2. had code p0306. changed plugs, wires, coil pack, injector. code is gone, but under a load we still have a cylinder 6 misfire

do a compression test, you may have a bend valve , I'm assuming its not getting overheating so I don't think its the head gasket..a compression test can give you the answer..hope this was very helpful...thanks

Misfiring. Error codes p0306, p0351, p0352


p0306 refers to cylinder 6 misfire detected===causes engine mechanical fault--wiring---ignition/fuel system--injector ---ECT/MAF sensor---ECM
IF there was a mechanical fault (hydraulic follower ) or valve it would be there most of the time and not just on start up. Possible injector fault but I would be inclined to check out the MAF sensor codes p0351 &2 refer to ignition coil A and ignition coil B primary /secondary--circuit malfunction === causes --wiring--ignition coil--ECM ( all causes for the both)
going on this check out the coils and check that the wiring and connections are clean and tight. basically I would be inclined to change out the coils and check /replace the MAF sensor.
change the engine --sounds like advice to get some extra money out of you.

Error code P0306


The DTC P0306 - Cylinder #6 Misfire Detected means that the the car's computer has detected that one of the engine's cylinders is not firing properly. In this case it's cylinder #6.

Symptoms may include the engine may be harder to start, the engine may stumble / stumble, and/or hesitate or other symptoms may also be present

A code P0306 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
Faulty spark plug or wire
Faulty coil (pack)
Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
Faulty fuel injector
Burned exhaust valve
Faulty catalytic converter(s)
Running out of fuel
Poor compression
Defective computer

Some possible solutions, if there are no symptoms, the simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back. If there are symptoms such as the engine is stumbling or hesitating, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the cylinders (i.e. spark plugs). Depending on how long the ignition components have been in the car, it may be a good idea to replace them as part of your regular maintenance schedule. I would suggest spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor (if applicable).

Otherwise, check the coils (a.k.a. coil packs). In some cases, the catalytic converter has gone bad. If you smell rotten eggs in the exhaust, your cat converter needs to be replaced. I've also heard in other cases the problems were faulty fuel injectors.

I have a ford explorer 99 but it's giving a error code PO306 what do u think it is


It sounds like a misfire. Check spark plugs 5 and 6. It could be bad fuel, bad plug wire, or weak coil. Check the fuel injectors as well. Other possible causes could be an egr valve stuck open, vacuum leaks, low fuel pressure.

Getting a po306 code on a 02 intrepid. changed all plugs and wire on the 6 cylinder. still has a bad misfire.


those cars have seperate coil packs right? try to move # 6 coil to a different cylinder and swap them- clear codes and try again. if P0306 comes back it is not a coil problem. If it comes back as a P0304 or (whatever cylinder you moved it to- you know its a bad coil. If not it could be a bad injector on # 6, intake vaccume leak, cracked intake manifold, cracked head, broken valve, bad headgasket or alot of things. Try swaping the coil first

A code P0306 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

Check all wiring and connectors that lead to the cylinders (i.e. spark plugs). Depending on how long the ignition components have been in the Caravan, it may be a good idea to replace them as part of your regular maintenance schedule. I would suggest spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor (if applicable). Otherwise, check the coils (a.k.a. coil packs). The number six cylinder is the one towards the radiator and drivers side. If you are going to change all the plugs and wire keep me posted, be glad to help. Car runs rough when warm an accelerator is applied normal


P0306 is a misfire on cylinder number 6. The fact that you have oil on those plugs may or may not be causing it. The oil on the plugs is because of a leaking "internal" valve cover gasket. First thing I'd do is change the valve cover gaskets. Audi will murder you if you want them to do it (I've heard of people quoted $700 or more for this job). It's VERY easy to do. You can order the gaskets from www.ecstuning.com or www.purems.com for about $25 per side. I'd change them for sure, as they're a known issue on these cars.

Now, if your new plugs and changing the gaskets (and cleaning up of course) doesn't fix the misfire, you need to swap coil packs around and see where the code goes. The coil packs are the three parallel items on the top front center of the engine under the beauty cover. Trace the #6 wire back to see which coil pack it goes to. Then swap that pack with another pack, clear the codes, and fire up the car. See if the check engine light comes back and if so, scan the car to see what codes come up. If you still get P0306, then the failure didn't move, and the coil pack is not the issue (in your case, it's likely to be the wire, since you have new plugs and swapping coils didn't work). If the misfire moved to a different cylinder (one which is now hooked up to the coil pack that was originally firing the #6 cylinder) then that coil pack is bad and must be replaced (another known issue on the A4).
