  • A lot of work goes into the replacement of a flex plate. Often time, replacing the back end of the engine becomes necessary. What he is saying is he may be able to get an engine and put it in for cheaper than all the labor involved with what needs done with your engine. The thing is a new engine would be FAR more expensive than a used engine. Anytime you buy a used engine you have to strip it down anyway and put a bunch of new parts anyway to make sure it does not go bad after you install it. Needless to say this is a lot of labor hours as well. It is going to cost some money either way but a new engine will not be cheaper and a used engine will need some labor hours put into it as well. It is my opinion that a new motor would not be cheaper. I would seek a second and a third opinion and when you get them opinions don't tell them what the others told you other than what is wrong and how much to fix and see what they say. Here is a brief description of the flex plate.

A vital part of an automobile engine equipped with automatic transmission, a flexplate consists of a piece of thick sheet metal that bolts to the crankshaft and torque converter. Similar in function to a flywheel in manual transmission engines and called a flexplate due to its expansion, or flexing, during the operation of the engine, flexplate usage presents opportunities for cracks to develop.

Noise - The classic and most obvious symptom of a cracked flex plate involves the sound it makes while the engine is running. Descriptions of the sound include clanking, chirping and a light knocking. The reason for the sound involves the flex plate's location and its function. Those factors ensure that when the engine starts and the driver puts it in drive, the cracked flex plate's movement will create a noise.

    I hope this helps you.

Broken motor mounts?

Would you not ask that question at an auto parts store
or go to an inline parts site?

Why not also install yourself?

I don't think a repair shop will appreciate you
walikg in with new parts as they loose the 20% or
more your trying to save.

On a Taurus you replace the motor & transaxle mounts

All of them,I think that is 3 in total.

I have a 2000 Jeep grand Cherokee. Can the bearing and crank shaft be replaced without having to replace the entire motor? They are telling me I need a new motor, but when I told them i couldnt come up...

Yes the crankshaft and the main bearings can be replaced w/out changing out the motor. You can probably get a motor out of a wrecked Jeep and have it installed for under 1,000.00 and have it done quicker than replacing the crankshaft, and main bearings.

I have a 1995 GMC Sierra K2500 pickup and i need to know where to find the blower motor and replace it. it will not blow out any heat right now.

I think i may have an answer for ya...Is your truck blowing air at all? if so its not within the blower...the problem is actually the a/c actuator. a little bit cheaper and easier to install...had the same problem with my truck...replaced everything but the actuator which cost a crapload of money and found out it was the actuator. your truck may require an upper and lower so check with local auto parts store...average price run about 60.00 for each.

Seat will not go forward or back all other movements work can anybody help me

with all other movements working more than likely the forward reverse motor is bad
or possible bad switch test the switch first if it appears to be good replace motor or seat
being as u have to remove seat to be able to replace motor might be cheaper to get another seat out of a junk yard most junk yards wont sell u just the motor
so have two options buy new motor (probably dealer only item and expensive) or get a seat out junk yard(drawback to this is seat color might not match but seat covers are cheap)

Trying to locate where the oil pump is on 1999 isuzu hombre please help

The oil pump is located directly below the distributor, in the oil pan. The oil pump is driven by the distributor but cannot be accessed by removing the distributor - the oil pan must be removed to replace and, I believe, the motor on that model must be lifted to access the oil pan. This is an involved, multi - step job I personally would not choose to do alone as you might wreck the motor accidentally. Many aftermarket repair manuals ( like Chilton's ) have decent directions step by step with illustrations, so I would recommend buying one of these for guidance if, like me, you're not financially gifted.
Good luck!!
p.s.check your local used book stores for the manual - it would be MUCH cheaper than a new one, saving you money for the parts and gaskets you will need.

Hello i am looking for proper instructions to change a motor in my 1994 dodge caravan. I am mechanically inclined and have lost my job so money to a mechanic sadly is not a possibility. i have changed many...

I would try going to local parts store and buying a haynes manual. I have had good luck with them changing out engines. Not a complete step by step but pretty close.. Lots of pics too.. May be able to find one cheaper on EBAY or craigslist. Let me know how you make out..

I would like to do an engine swap. I have an 1987 jeep wrangler 4.2l inline six with the 5 speed manual transmission. I would like to swap in a diesel engine that gets 40 to 50 miles per gallon. Is this...

well besides a ton of work. what is the diesel engine. i didnt think that jeep made to many of those if any. you are better off getting a truck that already is a diesel and save alot of time and money. which in the long run could be cheaper to buy a used truck that runs.
as for the swap you may have to buy need motor mounts or have special ones made to fit the mounts. then you got the fuel system and tank and since the diesel is alot more pressure you will have to change the lines and find a pump that will work, more money. then you need to get the wire harness changed to efi to the diesel and hope it works after modify to fix the truck. the if you moved to motor and trany from the stuck postion you will need new driveshafts. and then you got the radiator to get changed and if the new motor wieghts more you may have to change to springs in the front to keep the old ride hieght. told you it would be a ton of work.
