I'm assuming you mean P0717? Trans Input Speed Sensor.
This sensor tell the computer the speed and position of the transmission.

Once this sensor is replaced the code will need to be cleared from the computer.

Check engine light came on a few days ago and now just stays on

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. There are many things that can cause your check engine light to come on. When it does come on, this means the computer has detected a problem with the vehicle. Every car has this system. Anytime it is on, you can usually get a code number off the computer scan. The hookup is under the dash in most cars. You can buy a cheap one for around 50 dollars at most auto part stores. If you do buy one, you may need to find what each code means. If you don't own one or you can't get to one, you can take it to Autozone or Advanced Auto Parts to get your vehicle scanned. Most places do not charge for the scan. Autozone and Advanced Auto Parts do not charge when your check engine light is on. They will be able to scan it for you and give you the codes. They will let you know what it says and what parts you will need as well. if you ask. If your check engine light is flashing, this means there may be internal engine failure. If this is your case, get it scanned as soon as possible. The longer you go with the light on, the greater the chance you have to make the problem worse. Some of the newer vehicles has this system already built in. You will need to know sequence though, to make the code appear.

The check engine light for my 2001 kia optima is coming on and staying on. does this mean i need to have my car serviced?

most likely and more commonly it does. You can go to yourlocal auto parts store(most can do this) and ask them to put the code reader on it. Then take that list of codes(1 or more) and have them tell you whatthey mean or you could just take it to a shop for like and oil change or maintenance check up and ask them to scan the computer for codes.

My check engine light came on in my 06 Kia spectra. Could it just be I need an oil change?

you can run it in to an auto zone and get a code check. they'll be able to tell you what the light means. the onboard computer stores the codes after a light is tripped.
It could be oil level, but could be something more involved. If no auto zone nearby, a local mechanic can scan the computer for you as well.
