Hello, With good Comprehensive Auto Insurance you can probably get this fixed under fire coverage. It is worth asking about if you have that type of Insurance and most people do not realize that problems like this are covered even if the vehicle does not burn in flames.

If you can not get the Insurance coverage then you need replace the fuse box and wiring. Your best bet is to try to get a wiring harness out of a Salvage yard. Most of the time the wire loom is connected in big sections. So it may take several cars before you can make 1 whole harness.

You did not put the Year or Model of your car in with your request. If you have a onboard computer, your dash gauge grid, and many more parts may be bad. Usually the cause of the problem will be burnt end to end. It is really a matter of "Did the fuse let go fast enough?". And it is possible to make improper connections through the melting process which can completely bypass the safety feature of the fuse.

If you wind up doing this yourself, get a good Ohmmeter. I have tried Signal tracers which make a signal in a wire and have a listening device to track them. Its available at Home Depot and does not work well on wires that are tighty bunched. I have used one on a Cabin Cruiser and thats when I found out about tightly bunched wires.

I hope my solution is very helpful in getting this fixed. I know what you are going through as I had a car lite up on me while driving.

The headlights fuse on my montero 95 keeps shorting out, a thin wire at the headlight switch plug was in fact melted against the metal housing at the back of the steering wheel, i bridged that wire all the...

Observe the way the fuse burns out.
If the element is just melted in one area, then it's an overload (too much current).
If the element is completely vaporized (sometimes showing as a dark or black) it's a short circuit.
If short circuit, it may require checking entire wire harness.
If overload, check the headlight bulb or circuitry if HID (blue) type.

Good Luck

Windshield wipers completely stopped working

Well first I would check the fuse box for burned out fuses. Then I would get a simple dc power tester and see if the windshield wiper motor is getting power. If you don't have a bad fuse and the motor is still getting power I would say the motor has burned out.

Fuse blown which fuse is for cigarette lighters in the car

The fuse panel or fuse block, may be in the glove box.
Each fuse that you see is described to be for one or more circuits, and the amp rateings of each fuse in the circuit,is on the fuse itself. On Olds cars the Cigar liter is a 20 amp, and for that circuit only! It will be labled near the fuse. Pul it out and look at it if the fuse looks burned replace it, if it looks good, check both sides of it with a test lite, with ignition on! Both sides should have Battery voltage!

Headlights wont turn on?

One: replace the fuse box. Never tape a burned wire. It will eventually catch fire and then... You cannot fix a fuse box that has been burned. Also, there are surely burned wires elsewhere that you have not discovered yet. I recommend that you REPLACE the front harness, or at least the wires that were burned.

I have no power to the the radio

You will have to chase your power wire back to the fuse panel and/or the battery itself. The burning smell was more then likely the main power cord burning up. Replace it and it should all work well.
