The EGR valve helps your car more efficiently and completely burn fuel by recirculating a portion of your exhaust and running it through the combustion process again. This results in a cooler, more complete burn of the fuel which decreases you car's noxious emissions by prohibiting the formation of some harmful gases.

In most cases a bad EGR will have little to no affect on your cars gas mileage or performance. There are some cases though where there is a noticeable difference.

If your EGR valve is not functioning correctly your car will not pass emissions tests if they are required in your county or city.

Well when it gunks up from heat and exhaust residue and hence no longer moves to permit or preclude exhaust gases into your combustion system; either your warm engine combustion or your cold engine combustion will not be right and no doubt a SES light will come on. However there are no doubt tens of thousands of old cars running around with stuck EGRs.

It has a function, that is why it is there. Things that go wrong in replacing it generally include busting off a bolt, failure to properly clean the metal surfaces meaning a leak as soon as the new one is installed, and sometimes they can be in a place which is just damned inconvenient to work on.

Shut off lights on dash ABS and the T/C someone told me EGR value will do it

If the check engine light was on, the problem could be the EGR valve.
But if you are only dealing with the Traction control and ABS lights, chances are there is a problem with the ABS system.
You would need to get the system scanned for trouble codes to proceed with testing.

ERG Valve on 97 dodge intrepid, I have been told you need to drop the engine in order to replace the ERG valve. Are they trying to justify a large repair bill that I would be presented with, if I have...

YES THEY ARE!!! DO NOT DEAL WITH THEM! I hope you have it in writing that they told you that...because I would have them red flagged by reporting them to the Better Business Bureau! If you copy & paste the following link into address bar...you will see that the EGR Valve for your engine is easy to get at change WITHOUT REMOVING the ENTIRE ENGINE!

Auto Diagnostic Trouble Code

cORRECT. tHIS CODE DOES DEALs With emmissions. P1400 deals with the EGR valve. In case u are not aware, EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Re-circulation. What really this valve does is that it re-cycles some of the exhaust gases into the cylinder for combustion. The EGR valve might be blocked or has malfunctioned. It is advised that this valve changed or consult with a mechanic who is knowledgeable about this technology. a malfunctioned/dis-abled EGR system will cause the car to fail an emissions test, and may cause the EGR passages in the cylinder head and intake manifold to become blocked with carbon deposits, necessitating extensive engine disassembly for cleaning. So it is advised that u repair this ASAP
