Mk4 Brake and clutch fluid change and bleeding

First time I've done this on the R and after hearing various scare stories of it taking a while or being a tricky job involving Vag-com etc I thought I'd share my experience today.

Firstly you will need:

7mm spanner - front bleed nipple
11mm spanner - rear bleed nipple
9mm spanner - clutch bleed nipple
length of clear hose - makes clutch bleed easier
Eazi-Bleed Pressure Bleeder - because pedal pumping is for women
2 ltr brake fluid - Halfords Hi Perf 5.1 for me, run it in race cars and it works
spare wheel - for the Eazi-Bleed
R32 compressor - it's in the boot...keep that spare wheel at the right pressure

Ok, this is an easy job to do and very satisfying when done right, improved braking and clutch pedal motion...it should take you no more than about 1.5 hours all in and you should use around 1.5ltr of fluid.

Start off by connecting up the Eazi-bleed as per the instructions, making sure your spare wheel (I used the space saver from my Jag) is at 14.5-15psi. Once you've attached it to the reservoir and are sure there is no hissing (leaks), disconnect the tyre and fill the eazi-bleed with your new fluid. Re-attach tyre to build pressure.


Starting at offside side front, remove wheel, locate bleed nipple, remove cap, attach length of hose (directed at pan/bowl/jug), use the 7mm spanner to loosen the nipple just enough so the fluid starts to flow through. Don't open it too much and always keep an eye on the eazi-bleed bottle not getting too low on fluid). Keep an eye on the fluid coming through the pipe and when bubbles (there shouldn't really be any) have stopped and the fluid seems clear and clean. Tighten up the nipple.



Repeat the process, with front nearside, rear offside, rear nearside...eachtime checking the eazi-bleed bottle (topping up when needed as per instructions) and the condition of the fluid. You should use around 1ltr on the brakes as you're flushing the rubbish dot 4 as well as bleeding them.

With that all done, locate the bleed nipple for the clutch. It's right between the battery and engine and fairly accessible. Again, remove the nipple, fit your pipe, then loosen around 1/4 turn to see the fluid come out fairly quickly..you may want to fill up the eazi-bleed before starting this as it'll take about 500ml to do.

Pump the clutch pedal by hand, it'll go straight to the floor...it's normal. Pump it around 15-20 times keeping an eye on the EB bottle, you should notice some pressure come back to the pedal although it still won't return itself without you pulling it up.

Tighten up the bleed nipple, making sure when you remove the pipe to not get any on your car or paintwork. Disconnect the tyre, replace the reservoir cap and go test your silky smooth clutch.

How do i bleed the clutch on a 2001 Mitsubishi challenger


1 Press clutch pedal in fully and hold.
2 Open the bleed screw to allow fluid to escape.
3 Close bleed screw quickly.
4 Release pedal completely
5 Top off fluid in reservoir. Leave cap off of reservoir.
6 Repeat steps 1 to 4 no less than 10 times before going to 7 below. NO PUMPING!
7 Now purge the slave cylinder of any air bubbles that might be trapped inside of it.
8 Grab the clutch fork and push towards the slave cylinder pushing the rod all of the way into the slave cylinder as far as it will go AND HOLD it in.
9 open bleed valve and command helper to push the clutch down slowly purging any air that was trapped in the slave cylinder
10 As soon as the pedal hits the floor command your bleeder monkey to close the valve before you let the pedal return from the floor.
11 Repeat steps 1 to 4 one last time and proceed to the clutch reality check.

1986 22r 4x4 pick-up I need tips to replace clutch master cylinder and clutch release cylinder.


Start with the slave (release) cylinder. First take off the line and plug it with a golf tee or a short piece of hose with a bolt in the end. Remove the slave cylinder. Fill the new one with fluid and do the reverse. Then do the same thing with the master cylinder being careful not to lose any fluid. You may need to add fluid and bleed the system when finished.

Hi there i have a 98 vw golf which i have changed the clutch master cylinder and the slave cylinder ive pumped the oil back into the system from the nipple on the slave cylinder until the oil came up into...


I would start by draining the oil out and replacing it with brake fluid added into the reservoir and drained down and out the nipple. then i would bleed the system, going to need a helper for this procedure, look on youtube to see someone bleeding a hydraulic clutch.

Clutch is moving freely, no resistance


The command for the clutch is broken. Depending on your engine and country either it will be a cable or hydraulic failure.

Did you bleed the system? When you replace the the master and/or slave cylinder you have to bleed the system just as you would with brakes. There is a bleed screw on the slave cylinder. Open the bleed screw, have a helper depress and hold the clutch pedal down.Tighten the bleed screw, then release clutch. Repeat this procedure until you have removed all air from the system and the clutch pedal is firm. Keep an eye on the fluid level to avoid sucking air into the system. If you have done this, remember there is a possibility that the master or slave cylinder is defective.

Hello i just replaced my clutch master cylinder and the slave cylinder i bleed the lines but i cant get the truck in gear what can i do


did your clutch work ok before you replaced it ? if so recheck the clutch action at the tranny it should move 5-6 inchs when you depress it if not rebleed it ?clutch fork should move if not you still got air in it ?

Clutch pedal goes to floor


Its sounds like a bad clutch cylinder or bad slave cylinder or fluid leaking. First check brake fluid level in clutch master , and check for a leak in clutch system. If there are NO leaks, then you either have a bad clutch cylinder or a slave cylinder. Bleed clutch at bleeder screw on slave cylinder and make sure there is pressure from master cylinder. If there is pressure then slave cylinder may be bad replace slave and bleed and that should take care of you problem. If master is bad then replace bleed system ad you should be good. You blew the clutch cylinder or the related slave cylinder.  Refill with brake fluid and check for leaks and remember to bleed out the air.

The clutch split in two replaced it with new one but since then clutch pedal will not retern and clutch is constantly ingaged changed slave and master still the same


Did you bleed air out of slave cylinder? Was the pressure plate and clutch release bearing in good shape? Did you make sure the disk was turned with the springed side facing the pressure plate and not the flywheel?
