Question about 1992 Buick Century

3 Answers

I have a miss in my 1992 Buick Century 3.3 around 45 to 55 mph when acclerating, just a lug sometimes. I thought it maybe transmission. I took it to 2 transmissions shops and they said it was a miss in the engine. Stoops Buick said it was a phantom miss because it would not show a code. Please help.

Chances are this just a random engine misfire caused by bad spark plugs or bad ignition wires. Basically get a tune up and replace the ignition wires (spark plug wires) and your problem should be solved. Have a good day.

I Have the same car and have the same issue. Its the throttle position sensor. When this sensor is going bad, it will send an inaccurate message to the computer intermitantly at around 50 miles per hour. This will cause a slight hesitation in the motor for less than a second. I thought it was the transmission as well but its not. You can test the TPS sensor as well using a volt meter. Check out the videos on utube, they will show you how to do it. Get yourself a shop manual as well. Worst case scenario you are going to need to replace the ECM.

By the way, this issue will not activate the engine light or show a error code.

1992 Buick Century misses at all speeds, will occasionally die while at idle, but starts immediately and runs well except for the misfires. New air filter and plugs installed. Thinking plug wires and fuel...

At this point, replacing the plug wires is a great idea, especially if they are worn or over due for replacement, Always start with the basics...then proceed with diagnostics with possible engine management causes.

Engine stalls when you acclerate acts as if its getting no gas fuel pump and fuel filter have been changed

If the car starts and runs well, and then after about 20 MPH it acts like it's idleing, looses compression, and then the rpms jump really high depress the accelerator and see if it catches then then it should run semi nornally (maybe whining a bit, or sounds like a band whipping). You need to check your transmission fluid, this is the most common problem. Soon after you'll lose reverse, and then transmission damaged and needs an overhaul.

Depends on what engine is in each of the vehicles. Assuming that the 1992 Park Avenue and 1995 Buick Century both had similiar engines (both being a V6), then they would both be equiped with the 4T60E transmission and you should have no problems interchanging them. Any differences (if any) in the wiring or valvebodies can easily be changed from one to the other and will be fairly self-explanatory.

Hope this helps and good luck!

1992 Buick Century won't start sometimes but has spark in the plugs.

Faulty cam sensor maybe - it controls the injectors. To diagnose, when you get a non-start, spray a V.small squirt of easy-start(ether) and if it runs a little then you have a fuel issue. The spark timing is controlled by the crankshaft sensor so that can be faulty and cause a mistimed spark but usually you'll get a mis-fire in those cases.
