Question about Ford Escape

I have an 04 Escape when it's parked in damp or Heavy rain humid conditions upon starting engine vehicle idle's rough and check engine light blinks.Loss of power in the excellerator will only run top speed of 30 mph with hesitation and bucking.

Hi :) It sound like you are have problems with wet sparkplug wires you could replace them or buy some spray that has silcon in it that is made for sparkplug wire from a autoparts store that should fix the problem.Have a nice day!

Get map or mas sensor cleaning spray and clean the sample electrode in the round plastic tube behind the airfilter only using the spray dont use any brushes or touch the inner unit at all alow half an hour to dry disconnect your battery for 5 min and clean your spark plugs with a wire bristle brush your idol air control valve may be stuck as well clean with the same spray and a toothbrush then if that doesnt work replace your delta exhaust fume(?) pressure sensor or D.E.F.P. goodluck

In the olden days I found wet weather hard start was usually an indicator that new plug wires and a distributor cap were needed. However your vehicle probably does not have a distributor and may well not even have plug wires. However as a first measure I would still get a can of moisture displacing spray at any parts store, remove the individual coils from the plugs and give the end of the plug and the female connector of the coil a good spray. And make sure the well the plug sits in is nice and dry.

2006 ford free star when it rains the PCM gets wet and runs rough. Today it has rained for 3 days @ won't turn over. Battery is fine. Only a problem when it rains.


Rain should not affect your car starting. It sounds as if your battery is failing. Put your headlights on and get someone to turn the key with you looking at the headlights. If they dim to a glow-worm, your battery is not powerful enough. Sometimes a cell will fail and although your get 12 volts, you don't get enough cranking amps.

Regarding starting in damp weather, you can try this. Spray all the ignition leads with WD40 and also the inside and outside of the distributor cap. You can also try this which worked for me on an old Datsun that didn't like damp weather. Get some broadsheet newspapers and tape them together to make one large cover for the engine compartment. Make is about 10 sheets thick. Run the vehicle with this all over the winter. When you drive the paper warms and keeps the leads warm. When you park, any moisture in the air goes into the paper and doesn't condense on the ignition system. Make sure the paper is away from moving part like the radiator fan and the exhaust manifold. Check it after your first short drive, it should stay in place.

After a long drive on vacation in a heavy rain, the check engine, VSC, and Trac Off lights came on and stayed on. Autozone says the codes are P0015 and P0017. any ideas?


Year/make/model??? P0015 is a camshaft position sensor code and P0017 is a crankshaft position sensor code ( generically ). The computer most likely disabled the traction/Vsc as a safety related operation. It is possible the heavy rain may have caused an electrical issue within the wiring/sensors. I would suggest having the codes cleared and continue driving and monitor the engine light to see if these codes return. Ir they do, further diagnostics will be required

Car shakes at idle, sometimes feels like it slips when moving, exhaust crackles and pops?


You didn't mention which engine you have. If it is a 6 cylinder and the coils were changed the ignition wires should also have been changed. The rain, or moisture, will arch on broke down ignition wires. If the engine is a 4 cylinder, the spark plug boots should have been changed, if not the same condition would occur.
If the check engine light continues flashing you will damage the catalytic convertor. Have the PCM scanned again for miss fire codes, P0300, 301, 302 and so on.

My ford windstar 2003 hesitates during cold weather or wet conditions. But good during idle. Some time shows blinking engine light.


The flashing and rough running is to to a misfire or misfires cause by arcing due to moisture on ignition components. Eventually these misfires can lead to other problems such as damage catalytic converter. Start by identifying which cylinder(s) is/are misfiring. The arching can be reproduced with a spray bottle filled with soapy water. Spray the ignition components (wires, coils, distributor cap...)and look for the vehicle to idle rough. Replace any faulty component.

Engine light came on


That often has to do with emissions problems. Has it been raining lately? The check engine light on my Saturn will come on when the humidity is high after heavy rains.

Rough engine idle under heavy acceleration. After a heavy rain, I started the car and the idle was terribly rough. Changed out the spark plugs and wires. Its much better but the condition still exists...


heh, you might want to change the title here as I am pretty sure you cant idle under heavy acceleration.
However I think you were on the right track with the plugs and wires. You didnt mention the cap though and that is usually the biggest culprit in damp weather. Put a new cap and rotor on it and see if that doesnt do the trick.

I have a problem with Ford Escape stalling or running rough @ idle everytime it rains. was told it could be catalytic converter.


LEAKING BAD SPARK WIRES OR YOUR COIL PACK GETTING DAMP.IF YOU HAVE 3.0L ENGINE. COIL PACK ON BACK OF ENGINE.IF YOUR LOWER COWL SEAL IS MISSING WATER CAN RUN DOWN THE COWL WHERE SEAL SUPPOSE TO BE CAUSING WATER TO RUN BACK OF ENGINE DAMPING YOUR COIL AND WIRES.BAD PLUG WIRES WILL CAUSE PROBLEM WHEN IT RAINS.

If you have this problem its possible you got water in the main harness conector on the top middle firewall. I used a hairdryer and put some silicone on mine to help. Also, the coils on the sparkplugs and the rubber around the spark plug can easily fill with water so check all plugs and holes.

generally, when the engine is washed, water gets trapped behind the spark unit and stays there, creating a shorting path for spark plug current. best to dis-mount the spark unit (follow plug wires back to source) and dry and clean it thoroughly.
