Hi, can you tell us the trouble code given by the scanner? It should be a "P" followed by 4 digits.

Also, please tell us what has already been done to fix the problem.

OK, can you tell me waht work was done on the car? 171 indicates a vacuum leak. The 401 is EGR system. I can provide some troubleshooting steps.

For the code 401, I would remove the EGR valve and check it for clogging. Also check the hose and passages attached to the valve for clogging. Clean as appropriate.

For the code 171, check all hoses attaced to the engine intake manifold for leaks. Also check the main air inlet for a torn hose downstream of the mass airflow sensor.

With the V-6, in addition to checking the hoses for vacuum leaks, I would check the intake manifold gaskets. Get a can of carb cleaner and start the car. Then spray the carb cleaner on the gaskets as shown below. If the engine sopeed changes, you have a leaky gasket that must be replaced. Sorry, but this is an expensive repar, as the labor is several hours.

This code indicates your catalytic converter has worn out. Check the numbers from the emission test to verify you exceeded hydrocarbon limits. If yes, replace the converter. Not sure why the light is not coming on. Could be a bad connection between the computer and the instrument panel. You would have to troubleshoot the computer connector to find the problem.

Check engine light came on week ago. changed battery today and now check engine light not on. Will check engine light come on later?

The check engine light may come on later. When the check engine light comes on the computer in your car logs a code. This trouble code may or may not cause drivability issues. The computer in your car always tries to fix the problem. If the check engine light is not on, there is not a problem. It may come on later if it detects another problem. Changing the battery could have fixed some problems. The ground system on the cars cause a lot of problems for technitians. If the trouble light is not on, don't look to spend a lot of money to look for problems that the computer is not picking up.

Hi I have a 1994 firebird v6 3.4 liter engine, my engine light goes on when I drive at cruse speed 55 mph. the engine always runs smooth and when I stop the car for 1 minute and start it again the engine...

Your computer on your firebird is logging a trouble code when the check engine light comes on. Save yourself some money and go to a local parts store to use a scanner. Most parts stores will hook up to your car for free and tell you the codes that are being logged. You can spend a lot of money assuming what parts may be malfunctioning by just throwing parts at your car. Check it first and you will be money ahead.

Check engine light is on someone says it's the coil ignition it putt putt

Have the codes checked. This is the best way to find out what is causing the light to come on.If you start going by what people tell you they think it is you will spend a lot of money and not fix the problem.Auto Zone and mostr part stores will check your codes for free.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Car continues to misfire. Replaced spark plugs, wires, coils, module, fuel pressure regulator, and injectors. What else is left to do, without spending more money!!!!!!!

Guessing is the way to spend the most amount of money. After spending a lot of money guessing, most people dont want to spend money fixing the real problem, which in all cases, cost less than what they have spent. A shop will need to take it from here, First is to narrow down which cylinder is misfiring then go from there, Check fuel trims, compression, Vac leak, signal from the injector to the ecm. The injector is hot and the ecm grounds it. You dont say which engine you have, but the 2.4L have had a lot of coil housings go bad.

02 Jetta 2.0 Check Engine Light

Hi, only way to really know what the check engine light is for is to run a diagnostic check on the pcm using a OBD II diagnostics tool, you can buy one at most auto parts store's or if you don't want to spend the money on one some auto parts store's will do a diagnostics check on your vehicle for free, good luck.
