Fan motor does not run when engine is running, when engine switch off then fan motor runs, why?

The car is cooled by the water pump pumping the coolant and the movement of air through the radiator the fan is on a thermostat switch so it cuts in if the tempreture rises, the ignition turns off the water pump so as the water is not moving around the engine the temp rises the fan cuts in as to not damage the engine.

My 2001 beetle is over heating and abs light is on

first is there anti freeze in the radiator. How hot did it get? you can have a stuck thermostat or a bad water pump, and or a hole in one of the coolant hose. check and see if the radiator is full,if it is not add water, and start the car,and wait. about 5 minutes see if the upper radiator is soft when squeezed if it is then thermostat is ok ,but if it is hard to squeeze you have a stuck thermostat. if the that is ok . you may have a bad water pump or even a radiator fan not working

I have 2003 acura 1.7 el; when the car idles in traffic the tempreture indicator on the dashboard pushes to high. As I begin to accelerate the tempreture goes back to normal. Is it the thermostat that...

This is a classic indication of your coolant level being low. At idle, the level sit low and does not go thru the radiator for cooling, and when you accelerate, the coolant is pushed thru by the higher speed of the water pump.
It is also possible that you thermostat is stuck halfway, not enough to let the water thru at idle, but ok when driving.

I would like to comment on your cooling fans, make sure the fans are both working, the RAM air from driving may be cooling it enough when driving..

Hope that helps.

If you haven't replaced your water pump (composite impeller) to an aftermarket (metal impeller) then your heating problem lies in there. VW uses a plastic type impeller which cracks at the shaft connected to the pulley that drives it. When that happens, it might spin slower than engine speed or not at all. This will be a good time to do a timing belt service because it has to be removed out of the way in order to get to the water pump housing, so keep that in mind. Water pumps range from $69.95 - $89.95 from most VW internet shops that also offer free ground shipping.

Our sons 1991 honda civic wagon keeps overheating. we've replaced the thermostat & fuses...wonder what fan is for what. Big one seems to be fine, what is the one in front of the radiator? Any help...

the fans around the radiator should be spinning when car gets warm to high tempreture

if they are spinning check that the water pump is working

Where is the thermostat in my 2001 golf 1.8 turbo?

The thermostat is normally located on the cooling system of the vehicle..You need to look for the wiring that connects to the fan and work your way back until you reach the thermostat..If unplugged the fan will run constantly the minute you put ignition on.

Bmw 728i over heating problem

The thermostat and water pump are both common failure points on BMW 6-cyl engines of this era. I would recommend checking the thermostat first, then moving on to the water pump. If the vehicle has overheated several times, you may need to remove the cylinder head and have it checked for warp.

I have a 1993 volkswagon golf and i cant seem to find where to the tap is on the raditor

I think the problem could be your thermostat not opening when hot. Turn the heater on full inside the car and check if you are getting hot air from the vents as the engine reach's its normal running tempreture. It should blow hot, if it blows cold then change your thermostat. Also check all the hoses for leeks.
