Most likely cause with out knowing if there are any codes in the system would be it fuel system lost prime. I would recommend checking for fuel pressure. If non is present then the system needs to be primed and if it will not hold pressure after that the pump is most likely bad.

The wait to start light is telling you there's a problem. Check out your drivers guide. There can be a whole load of problems causing this problem, water in the diesel, blocked fuel filter, no diesel, but if it cranks and starts eventually. The glow plugs probably need replacing.

My 95 dodge 3500 diesel takes a long time for the wait to start light comes on when its cold outside does anyone know why?

the glow plug may be old and worn. your vehicle is waiting for this to get hot enough to start your diesel and over time the heating element gets weak and deposits form on it. try replacing the glow plug. hope this helps

Check the fuel heater and the intake air heater.
Your injection pump or your injectors may be getting weak
There may also be a leak in the fuel system that is allowing air to enter it.

Will not start

make sure both batteries are charged, clean battery terminals, make sure the wire coming from the rear of your alternator is snug on the positive battery post. I take it that it's a diesel-(you said batteries} One last thing to try if it's turning over good but not firing; CHECK THAT 10 AMP FUSE THAT SAYS: ENGINE FUSE. hope this helps

96 dodge ram 3500 diesel

Check the large probably 100 amp fuse under the PDC cover. Is this a 12 valve or 24 valve engine? If it's a 12 valve, it may be a bad crank sensor. It tells the PCM to turn on the ASD relay which supplies power to the alternator field.

Dodge 3500 diesel lift pump

When the key is turned to the start position, the pump should run for about 20 seconds. Do this 3 or 4 times to prime the pump.

If it still doesn't start, the bad lift pump may have damaged the injection pump. Crack a fuel line loose (don't remove it) and turn the engine over, you should have fuel at the fitting.
