An oil filter adapter houses components for the oil system, such as an oil temperature gauge and an oil pressure gauge. If you are having issues with the adapter or any of the add-on components attached to it, you may need to remove it for an inspection. Because the oil filter is attached to the oil filter adapter, removing the oil filter adapter is a process very similar to changing an oil filter. Here is how you can remove the oil filter adapter in your car:-
Raise the front end of your vehicle from the ground with a jack, tire iron and two jack stands. Now drain the motor oil into an oil pan. Clean any spillage on your hands with a towel and soap and water. After this remove the oil filter with an oil filter wrench. Remove the oil filter adapter with a crescent wrench or socket wrench set. Seat the jaws of the wrench on the base of the adapter. Turn counterclockwise to loosen.

It is important too identify the following:
1) The source of the exhaust leak
2) The source of the oil leak.
The exhaust leak could turn out to be a bad exhaust gasket, a cracked or loose exhaust manifold, a cracked cylinder head or bad gasket, or related parts. The oil leak could turn out to be the valve cover gasket. A dried out valve cover gasket can cause oil to sit on the spark plugs and have oil leaks. Be sure not to over-fill the oil. A machine shop can find cracks in cylinder heads. If these problems turn out to be ok (and one of those stethoscopes may be helpful) then you could procede to check fuel delivery. (there will be pressure in the lines) A lot of times connectors get corroded. I noticed on this model the sensor for the engine cooling mounted near the thermostat is very sensitive to variation. Same for the air sensors if left loose.

How to change gasket on oil cooler 2001 Kia Sportage?

An "O" ring can be purchased at your local auto parts along with your oil filter. Your oil filter screws on top of your oil cooler. Mine leaked as well. A new "O" ring and filter screwed on tightly solved my problem.

Oil leak

How long is a piece of string ? without a good look under the bonnet i couldnt say but make sure the engine breather is clean and not clogged as this would cause a build up of back pressure which will cause the oil top leak from everywhere possible

Daughters 2000 sportage has a bad oil leak in the filter area but it isnt the filter it looks like it is coming from the piece the filter screws onto but the filter is sealing correctly.

First, make sure there isn't an old filter "o" ring stuck to the filter adapter. Sometimes when removing the old filter, the "o" ring stays, and this will leak oil, after installing the new one, as you will have two "o" rings together.
If this is OK, then inspect the adapter for cracks, or bad threads. The adapter is what your filter threads onto, and this is replacable.
