86 Cherolet Astro van ran out of gas while driving, and when i refueled with about a gallon it still wouldnt start. I tried adding more gas by filling with another gal. and same result. When i try to start it just cranks and does not start. Before this incident i usually start it on the first or second try. Do you think its my fuel pump or fuel pump relay?

Or the smart thing to do is turn the key to the on position without cranking the engine. If you hear a humming sound comming from the rear of the van then the fuel pump is working. If you do not hear it check all your fuses. If they're all good then its time for a fuel pump. But first make sure the van is on level ground and prime the system by turning the key to the on position wait for the sound of the pump to stop then turn the key off and back on agin , do this a few times then start the van.

Thats a GREAT IDEA! Beat on your gas tank with a hammer!!!!!
What next? Look for leaks with a lit match?
You should check the fuel pump relay first.....then the pump just as you suspected. This seems to be a common problem with the Astro van (its all over the internet)

Actually. that is a great idea, only his wording is off. If u in fact used a RUBBER MALLET, you could safely cause the vibration needed to kick the pump back into working order long enough to hopefully change the filter!!!!!

My car ran out of gas, now it will not start

If high miles, it may be a fuel pump. Fuel pumps usually go when gasoline is low and pump gets too warm. This may mimic running out of gas when there is a gallon or two of gas still left to draw but needle reads empty. Have someone put their ear to the gas tank while you turn on the ignition switch. the pump should run for 2-10 seconds with key on and not cranking.

If you don't hear the pump run, then investigate further for a failed pump.

2003 astro van wont start

Are you getting spark to the plugs and do you have fuel pressure at the injectors ?
Can you tell if the pump is running when you first turn on the key switch ??

98 ford windstar van ran out of gas and now wont start even after refueling.

To review - - the fuel pump in the tank pumps fuel to the injectors.
There is a fuel shut-off which works in a wreck to prevent a fire.
If the plunger is down, the switch is on. Normal.

It is possible the fuel lines are full of air which would take a long time to purge by cranking the engine. Sometimes you have to use starting fluid or other means to "run" the engine long enough to get gas back into the injectors.
As long as the engine cranks, the battery is fine.
It is also possible the pump was damaged when the tank was run empty. The pump uses liquid fuel to cool and lubricate the electric pump. It can overheat when running the tank below 1/4 full.
It is also possible the fuel filter was clogged with junk from the bottom of the tank.
I would get someone to check for fuel pressure at the injectors and try some carb cleaner or starting fluid in the intake hose next.

1998 Ford Windstar van ran out of gas. Added 5 gallons and setting on flat ground. Can not get vehicle restarted. Any Suggestions?

the feul filter needs to be changed. when you ran your car out of gas you sucked all of the sediment from the bottom of the tank into the fuel filter.

What could make a 2000 astro van with 4.3 V6 just die as we where driving no codes thought it ran out of gas but that was not the problem still had about 10 gallons in tank. Towed it home replace fuel...

check the fuse for the injectors, the wires may have shoted out at the breather and blown the fuse to open the injectors--separate fuse than the fuel pump

1996 astro van stopped running

Sounds like dirty gas and the fuel filter is clogged...try changing the fuel filter...some are under the car, but most are mounted against the firewall in the engine compartment.

Sounds like it may be bad gas. At least it is the first place to look!

Get a good bottle of Gasline Antifreeze. Pour it in the Gas Tank. Bounce the car up and down a little to get it mixed up with the gas. Start it up and let it run for a little while. Adding ONE bottle of this to your gas every time you fill-up will also help clean your engine and, if you are lucky, get you a few more miles to the gallon. If this does not Fix the problem at least it didn't do any harm. I use it religiously.
It is what I have done for years...
