AC always leaks freon through the pulley shaft in the compressor.
The best way to hold freon longer, is to use the AC every single month, even in winter, for a few minutes. That helps oil the seals.

If you have not had to replace the freon before, you were just lucky.
It is almost always just the freon.

Not only is the $145 appropriate, but you could have just gotten a can and done it yourself for $20.

And by the way, a whole new compressor is more like $400 plus $100 labor.

2001 SUZUKI VITARA NOT BLOWING MUCH AIR THROUGH VENTS, FAN IS RUNNING AND RESISTOR AND RELAY HAVE BEEN REPLACED

passenger side under dash are a couple of filters. If they are dirty, it will not blow much air. Not sure where to get new ones, so I left mine out and the fan works great. Potentially could get dusty I guess.

What are the steps in replacing the compressor in a 2001 grand vitara I have the compressor

I assume your talking about the A/C compressor. You will need to recover all the refrigerant with the proper equipment. then take the belt off and disconnect the wiring to the clutch. For warranty the drier/reciever is changed too. Also a flush of the system is probably required. Once the system has been flushed out, install new drier/reciever and compressor after adding the proper amount and type of oil. then the system has to be evacuated ( vacum drawn) to remove all the moisture and normal air. Then you can begin adding the refrigerant. If you don't have the proper tools and equipment, this is not a DIY job. failure to do it right may cause damage to the new parts and system failure.

The heater on our 2001 Grand Vitara 2.0 Diesel has stopped working. it only blows cold air. How can I fix this?

on my 2001 vitara the heater core was no good, replacing it was an expensive pain in the *** so i traded it in. i did however disconnect the heater hoses and blast a garden hose back and forth
through the core several times which gave some detectable heat. So i am sure that my core was bad. I have since read however that there is a common problem in that the cool air blender flap gets stuck open and that a dealer can fix this in a jiffy. before attempting a replacement i would call a dealer and drop by to make sure that your blender flap is not awry. you can buy a repair manual CD on ebay for about 10 bucks.
