Question about Ford Ranger

1 Answer

1) What is location of EGR valve for a 1994 Ford Ranger XLT, V-6, 4.0 L engine. 2) Just failed emissions as NOx too high. Attendant informed me that the EGR valve could probably just be removed - clean excess carbon off and reinstall. He felt confident that this wd resolve problem. - I'm just a desk-jockey, whadda I know ? Sound logical ? Possible ? Plz advise, Much thanks, Matt

I'm not sure exactly where the valve is located on your model but I'd like to offer advice.

High NOx levels can be caused by faulty EGR valves. The valve operates off of vacuum and the problem may just be a torn or disconnected vacuum hose. However if the valve is clogged it will need ro be removed, cleaned, inspected and reinstalled with a new gasket. This is a fairly straightforward job, but you need at least a basic tool set and socket set, you must know what parts of the valve to clean, and how to clean them without damaging them, you will need to scrape off the old gasket without damaging the mating surfaces, etc. Also because the egr valve comes in contact with hot exhaust gasses the bolts can become seized over time making them very difficult to remove.

Only because you call yourself a desk jockey I assume you don't have much, if any, auto repair experience. It might be best to just take the truck to a reputable repair shop. Weather the valve needs to be cleaned or replaced the shop will only charge an hours labor, plus the cost of the part if needed. If you do decide to try your hand at the repair I would strongly suggest spending $20 on a repair manual. The pictures and step by step instructions are invaluable to a first time mechanic. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Failing emissions testing due to high NOX (oxides of nitrogen)

I have seen several people posting emissions failures due to high NOX (oxides of nitrogen). Nox is created when the engine's internal combustion temperature gets to high.

Two reasons this can occur is improper coolant levels and a malfunctioning egr system. The egr system injects exhaust gas from the exhaust and uses it to line the cylinder walls. This in turn reduces the combustion chamber size and internal combustion temperatures. Ultimately this reduces the amount of NOX created. These systems functioning properly can be the difference in passing or failing your emissions testing because of high NOX ppm.

Where is the egr valve located on a 1994 Ranger 4.0L V6?

If your ranger has a egr valve it will be on the driver's side of the upper intake plenum (the top aluminum housing, very top of the motor) and about centered on the plenum.in 1994 I have seen Rangers with and without a egr valve. I believe it depends on if its California emissions or not.
