Have you cleaned the throttle body and throttle body valve? have you cleaned the idle speed control air bypass valve? are the injectors clean? Are there any fault codes in memory, do the things I mentioned if you haven't already. Also hard engine mounts can cause roughness at idle. Another thing is the timing belt tight?

Can vacuum leak affect transmission up shifting? A cracked vac hose? 4.1 V8 FWD. Throttle Body Fuel Injection.

run the fault codes first to check for TCM or servo/solenoids faults
the actuator is vacuum operated so a broken/ missing hose will have effects on gear shifting

Setting idle

ck air filter, make sure clean and not having a chocking effect on engine and make sure throttle body i clean as this will slow down air passing through system because it makes the air rough and has a slowing on the air and the computer will set paremeters try to make vehicle run as smoth as possible for these conditions ,it goes into limp-home-mode .cleaning throttle boby helps the air to move through smoothly and improves idl and throttle responce

1989 300e runs bad at idle and long time to start

Sounds like fuel filter may be clogged or the throttle body might need cleaning. Or the fuel pump is going bad. I know it sounds like I could narrow it down more but thats the symptoms of all of these things. You just have to narrow it down!!

1989 Lincoln Town Car will start no problem, has good gas, but will not idle, so when I put it in reverse to back out of my driveway it stalls. Now there is no heat in car either (possibly heater core) but...

you may need too clean the throttle body .go to the part store buy some throttle body cleaner spray.then remove the big black hose from the throttle body on the top of the engine. with a soft tooth brush open the throttle full. spray the black gunk on the blade and in the barrel. then with the tooth brush scrub the black gunk. spray clean . reattach the hose.when you first start hold the throttle open full until it starts and runs smooth.or just above 2000 rpm .then let idle for two minuets. before you put in to gear.

Car idles up and down when started. No check engine light comes on and once the car is warmed up after started the idle evens out and runs smooth @ 800 rpm

the idle air control valve located on or near throttle body is dirty and sticky you have to remove and clean valve pintle and passages of grease and carbon also clean throttle body and plate use only air intake cleaner and rags that dont leave lint or fluff all parts stores will have proper cleaner

Hi, I have an 89 Chevy 1500 with a throttle body. The truck runs rich. The oil pressure gage reads 15 psi when the engine is warm and waiting at a light. It shoots back to 30-35 psi once I get going. Any...

Running rich can be from a bad sensor, such as O2, mass air, temperature, throttle position, etc., which would effect all cylinders and run smooth.
Or from a bad plug or wire, bad compression, etc., which would not effect all cylinders and run rough.

The most common with this age, would be PVC blowby foam coating the air mass sensor. Just take it off and clean it. Then splice long hoses into the PVC, and run it down to a metal container that get cold in the wind, to condense out the oil and water vapors before it gets into the intake.

Your oil pressure is perfectly fine.
On new vehicles, oil pressure can even drop below 10 at idle, and to above 40 when at high RPM.

When putting van in gear the engine runs rough

how about putting the van in drive with one foot down hard on the brake and rev the engine, does it smooth out now? if it smooths out, i would pull the air cleaner tube to the throttle body and spray the throttle body with carb cleaner, be careful if using the red tube, I have had it blow off before into the intake, not good, open the accelerator and spray it out really good, it will to start until all the cleaner clears out.

In extreme cold starts but won't idle well needs to have high rpms to stay running til warm

Try cleaning the throttle body, Remove the intake hose that connects to the intake and air filter box. You will need a can of throttle body cleaner $6. and clean rag. Spray the cleaner in the throttle body and you will see black carbon build up running out of the throttle body. clean the butterfly, which is what opens/closes when the throttle is open or closed inside the throttle body. repeat 2-3 times and wipe it dry and clean with the cloth, be sure not to leave any material inside the throttle body. re-connect what you removed. It will be hard to start for a second, don't worry it's the cleaner. After start up let it run for a minute and test drive. Cheap fix on alot of vehicles.
