The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system's purpose is to redirect exhaust gas back into the cylinders. Since exhaust gas is inert, it displaces oxygen and fuel, thereby lowering cylinder temps, which, in turn, lowers oxides of nitrogen emissions. For that reason it needs to be carefully metered into the cylinders (via the EGR valve) so as not to adversely affect the engine's performance. (Too much EGR and the engine won't idle).

If you have a P404 , then the EGR valve is likely an electrically controlled EGR valve instead of a vacuum controlled EGR valve. Also, the valve will usually have a feedback system built into it that informs the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) what position the valve is in; open, closed, or somewhere in between. The PCM needs to know this to determine whether or not the valve is operating as needed. If the PCM determines that the valve should be operating, but the feedback circuit shows that the valve is not open, this code will set. Or if the PCM determines the valve should be closed but the feedback signal indicates that the valve is open, this code will set. Now enough of all that technical stuff. Basically tou will need to test your voltage at your EGR valve. I'm not sure of the scanner has but some you can use to test the circuit. You will need to make sure you are getting about 5 volts to it. If not you have either a bad ground going to it or a short somewhere in the circuit. Worst case is you could have a faulty PCM (not likely). You may have a faulty EGR valve as well but I would do my best to make sure of this before I would replace as the electric EGR's can get expensive. I hope you got all this and that I hope it helped...Good luck. One other thing you could have carbon buildup in the EGR causing it not to work correctly as well. If you can clean the build up that will help as well.

My check engine light comes on stays for quite awhile then goes off for a few days

Hi June,
Well, something is going on. Something, somewhere is intermittent and throwing the error. What happens next is you "pull the codes". A device hooks up to the car's computer and reads what ails it.
However, this often is not the answer, but rather a clue.
For example, a small vacuum leak will cause a partial misfire, and the oxygen sensor may throw an objection. The point is: do keep after it, something is going on and it is never good. But often not a big thing.

Check engine lite on .pull codes p404. Also has lite miss on easy acceleration from stop.Need to pass state emissions test

P0404 EGR circuit range just replace the EGR,the light miss is from your egr pintle being stuck open. either you clear the code with a scan tool or if you dont have one it will take 2 trip of no emission problem for the ECM to clear the check engine light,

My Check Engine light comes on quite often but it goes off the next day when I start my car. And Sometimes it goes off when I shut the caqr off the turn it back on. Also I have a rattling but only...

It is best that you have a scanner used on your car to retrieve the error codes. The sound that you are hearing may or may not be related to the error the car's ECU has detected. Once you get the error code you can accurately diagnose the problem.

While driving car tach goes way up and car almost shuts off and cruise light came on and then it went off after giving some gas . got an engine light on and got a code 12 54 and 55.

My problem was similar. It would want to cut off while driving but keeps going. Had fuel pump replaced same thing. had throttle body cleaned and computer codes put back in. Same thing. No one figured what it was till it didn't start one day then start the next day the code told dealer it was the crank sensor. Friend has same car with the same problem it was the crank sensor.
