Normally to replace belts we don't take the shroud off its just an uncomfortable and tight job. The only way to take the shroud off is to disconnect the radiator and pull the radiator and shroud out at the same time. Good luck.

I suspect the water pump needs replacement, since there is liquid like fluid below engine. what are the steps one must take, to replace the water pump. Why is it not simple to do? Looks like alot of...

1.3L & 1.6L Engines
  1. Remove the timing belt cover, timing belt, tensioner, plate and spring.
  2. Remove the water pump mounting bolts.
  3. Remove the one (1.6L MFI engines) or two (1.3L and 1.6L TFI engines) small rubber seals from between the water pump and the oil pump, and the water pump and the cylinder head.
  4. If necessary for clearance, remove the oil level dipstick tube retaining bolt from the engine block and the alternator adjusting brace.

Do NOT use a prybar between the water pump housing and the engine block to separate the two components; this can cause scratches and/or gouges, which can prevent proper sealing.

  1. Pull the water pump off of the engine block. If the water pump is difficult to remove from the engine block, use a soft-faced mallet to tap the water pump housing until it loosens.

Do not disassemble the water pump; if the water pump is damaged or defective, the entire unit is replaced.

  1. Thoroughly clean the water pump gasket mating surfaces of old gasket material and corrosion.

The drive belt can be used to hold the fan stable while loosening the mounting fasteners

Loosen the fan bolts, then either remove the drive belt before the fan and shroud ...

... or wait to remove the belt, along with the water pump pulley

Once the cooling fan and shroud are removed, access can be gained to many of the engine components, including the water pump

To install:

  1. Along with a new gasket, install the water pump on the engine block. Tighten the water pump mounting bolts to 88-115 inch lbs. (10-13 Nm).
  2. On 1.3L and TFI 1.6L engines, install two new rubber seals: one between the water pump and oil pump, and the other between the water pump and the cylinder head. The MFI 1.6L engines only use one rubber seal, located between the water and oil pumps.

Be sure to install the two rubber seals between the water pump, oil pump and cylinder head before installing the timing belt cover-1.3L and 1.6L TFI engines

The 1.6L MFI engine uses only one rubber seal between the oil pump and water pump

  1. If removed, install the alternator adjusting brace and the oil level dipstick retaining

Need a diagram for serpentine belt for a 1998 Olds 88

There should be a decal on the underside of the hood or on the fan shroud. If not, a local library should have a repair manual available. There are different configurations available on an Olds.

Water pump replacement

Disconnect the negative battery cable, then drain the engine cooling system. 2. Relieve the belt tension, then remove the drive belt. 3. Remove the upper fan shroud, then remove the fan or fan and clutch assembly, as applicable. 4. Remove the water pump pulley. 5. If applicable, loosen the clamp(s) and disconnect the coolant hose(s) from the water pump. 6. Unfasten the retainers, then remove the water pump from the engine. Note the positions of all retainers as some engines will utilize different length fasteners in different locations and/or bolts and studs in different locations. To install: 7. Using a putty knife, carefully clean the gasket mounting surfaces. 8. Apply 1052080 or an equivalent sealant to the threads of the water pump retainers. Install the water pump to the engine using a new gasket, then thread the retainers in order to hold it in position. 9. Tighten the water pump retainers to specification: For the 4.3L engine, tighten the bolts and studs to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm). 10. If removed, connect the coolant hose(s) and secure using the retaining clamp(s). 11. Install the water pump pulley, then install the fan or fan and clutch assembly. 12. Position the serpentine belt over the pulleys, then carefully allow the tensioner back into contact with the belt. 13. Install the upper fan shroud, then connect the negative battery cable. 14. Properly refill the engine cooling system, then run the engine and check for leaks.

Replacing serpentine belt on my '92 Jimmy 4.3 v6

There should be a diagram on the fan shroud showing you how the belt should go on. Thrse is a tensioner that holds the belt tight It is about as big around as a large doughnut and has a smooth surface where the belt has been riding on it. It has a nut in the middle of it. Use a socket and a breaker bar or ratchet on it to compress the spring in it so that you can put the belt on easy. Then slowly release the tensioner to tighten the belt.
good luck
