Before I would start messing with the gear box, I would recommend that you check out the tie rods, ball joints, pitman arm/control arm, to see if that is where the slack is. Most of the time that is the case.

My 1987 chev. 3500 dually front end driver side shakes bad between speeds 35-40. It started on my trip to Kings Canyon National Park

check wheel nuts for tension ( possible theft attempt on the wheels)
check wheel bearing condition and adjustment
check steering rod ball joints and suspension mounts
have a wheel alignment done for possible alter to the settings from the road.

I can hear a anoying sound, like a huming that is most prevlent around 40 mile per hrr, arond 70 or so it goes away, kinda sounds like a rearend bearing going bad i had problems with when i had a 89 chevy...

hello
Sounds to me like it could be a wheel bearing bad the best way to tell without tearing it apart would be when you are driving down the road and it is making the noise slightly turn the steering wheel left and right if the noise changes at all then it is the wheel bearing pretty commen problem
good luck

Hello, I got a 89 mustang LX and the steering is very unresponsive. It has several inches of free play in the wheel before I get a response, I already checked power steering fluid and it is fine. -Cheers

This is more of a suggestion than an answer. You need to check on your steering column under the hood. Start your car an have someone turn steering wheel back and forth. Look at the steering knuckle at the end of your column. I am currently having the same issue, my steering wheel has alot of play to it and the knuckle is worn out. Im not sure if steering knuckle is the correct name but its the joint that connects your steering column to your rack an pinion i believe.

Much play in steering wheel; possibly the 3 set screws in the bottom of steering column? how to fix? this is on 1987 chev 1/2 ton

Replace steering column with a better one or you must break down the steering column all the way down untill you the screws in the bottom of the column and tighten them up. It is some work and you may need to video while you are taking it apart so you can remember how to reinstall it.Good Luck!!!

88 Chev Van 30 350 with hydro boost pump seized/brakes locked up.

to relieve the brake pressure to move the vehicle , open the bleeder ******* at each wheel for a half second
but you will have to replace the failed hydro booster unit or you will get the same problem back or have no brake assist during braking

Serious understeer with 96 Dodge Ram 3500 Dually

Are the tie rod ends tight? Is the trac bar (frame end) tight? The steering boxes on these trucks require more input that a 1/2 ton truck or a car. How is the alignment? The caster on these should be set to about 5 degrees, the original specs allow a lot of wandering.

Yes, it will fit.Years that fit are 89 to 94.Appearance may be different it steering wheel between a chev or gmc,but wiring should be a exact fit.Other differences in columns are column shift(auto)w/tilt or w/out tilt wheel or floor shift(standard)w/tilt or w/out.
