Sounds like you have a short in the wiring for your brake lights unfortunately this on of those things that you have to take to an auto electric shop. Good luck some times those problems can be pricey.

Brake lights not working (all)

Good morning Wayne
You seem to have been thorough. The one thing you didn't mention was fuses. Most all lights in a car are on a fuse circuit. They often are separated specifically so that, say, a burned out or short circuited back-up light doesn't take out the brake light as well. I didn't see an owners manual easily available on line, but I'd guess that if you hunt down your fuse panel, you may find a blown fuse that covers one or both of the tail lights.

Good Luck!

Rear brake light problem

When you cleaned the plug, you could have bent the tabs a bit. Pull it again and bend them towards the bulb . It doesn't take much.

I have a 1990 chevy cheyenne c2500. my brake lights, parking lights and blinkers arent working and when i try to replace the fuse,it blows immediatly. what could the problem be?

What is the amp rating on the fuse that keeps blowing? I looked at wiring for stop lamps, 15 amp fuse. Unplug connector for stop lamp switch, see if the fuse still blows? Also see if anything at connector looks burned or melted.

You could have problem with fuse box, itself. Look at back side of fuse box, see if anything looks burned or melted.

The switch is fine if the third brake light is functioning. Even though the tail lights work, the filament for the brake light can be burned out. Sometimes they look intact but are still burned out. Replece the bulbs.

'99 Expedition brake lights aren't turning on when pressing brake

It could be a number of things, the good news is that none of them are serious or expensive to fix.

The normal components that make up your brake circut are:

1. The brake light fuse (In the fuse box and labeled as such)
2. The brake light switch/relay - also called a stop light switch. It's under the dash, right behind the brake pedal arm. When you push the brake, it sends a signal to the lights which turns them on. Think of the dome light switch in the door jam of your truck. When you open the door, it releases the switch and your dome light pops on. Same thing with the brake light switch.
3. The bulbs in the tail lights and the 3rd brake light.
If none of them are working, it's most likely a fuse or the switch/relay under the dash. If it's the switch, it's a $12 part. Obviously fuses are only a couple bucks.

All the brake lights will not come on when pressing brake pedal

Make sure the brake switch is working. Leave it hooked to the wire harness and work it by hand while someone checks the lights. If the switch works it just needs to be repositioned on the pedal and adjusted. If it doesn't work, check the fuse. If the fuse is burnt or burns out again you have a burnt wire. Start tracing them out one at a time looking for a burn mark. I'd start with the power wire first. It's usually red or orange,it's the most likely problem. Cut out the burnt piece and splice it back together. Tape it up well and look for anything it could rub on to prevent this from re-occuring. This should get you back on the road.

Only headlights work, 91 4dr EX

ok supaxang, could this solution be as simple as replace the 2 rear bulbs? The brake light and tail light (parking light) are the same bulb, 2 filaments, one for brakes, one for tail lights. If the the tail light filament burns out, the brake light will continue to work ok. It is quite possible that both tail lights burned out, and the brake light filaments are good and still working. Replace w/ bulb #2057. Let me know if this fixes it, if not, I'll keep working on it.

Brake lights on GTI

Check to see if the brake light switch is working first by putting a jumper on the switch that is located just above the brake pedal arm.
This switch is pushed when you press the brake pedal, and turns on the brake lights just like turning on a light switch.
I may be out of adjustment too.
Otherwise, you may have all the brake light bulbs burned out.
I would try a new bulb in one brake light first.
