Hey Mark,

Dark Green from ignition and Black/White go to relay coil.

Red from battery to relay common

Dark Green from starter solenoid to relay N.O.

Solenoid wiring diagram


If you have a relay to the starter solenoid then red one from the battery then red from the relay to the starter solenoid. The starter solenoid earth wire goes into the starter housing for the brushes if not then the red wire from the battery goes direct to the starter solenoid big terminal. The other big terminal will already got inside the housing. That takes care of the really heavy wires . The small wire goes to the little terminal between the big terminals.

Let's see if I can explain it. Pretty simple start circuit, but starting issues are very common to Hondas and Toyotas of the '80's and early'90's. Lots of guys used to rewire their start circuits with new wiring and relays from ignition switch to the starter solenoid just to stop those no starts.
From the ignition switch is the black/white start wire, it is hot only in start, goes direct to the "starter cut relay"- a 4 pole starter relay, the black/ white wire (black with a white stripe) is both the power feed and the coil power to the relay. Before the wire enters the relay it is spliced. one wire goes to power feed at relay, other wire goes to coil side of relay. Here's where the clutch switch comes in: the clutch switch acts as the ground for the relay's coil side. Okay, you turn key to start, power goes to the relay on both the power side and the coil side. When clutch is depressed, it grounds the coil side of relay, this energizes the relay, so power goes out of relay on the power side, as a black/red wire...and goes direct to the starter solenoid. Somewhere before it reaches the solenoid, it turns back into a black/white wire. But nothing else is in a wiring diagram for your start circuit. Buy a can of CRC electronic cleaner. Spray all connectors in the start circuit. Pull off the solenoid wire at starter-that connector. Also the starter relay , pull it out and clean the relay terminals where it plugs in. Get all clean connections in the circuit. If no help, swap in a different relay. If still no help, get a voltmeter (or a test light), when the starter doesn't want to work, check for power at the starter solenoid with key held in start, and clutch depressed. If power there, the solenoid is the problem. If no power, work back to the relay. Pull relay out. With key held in start, two terminals for the relay should have power-the coil plus side, and the power feed from the ignition switch. If both have power, may be the clutch switch not grounding the relays coil side. If no power to relay, check the start wire out of the ignition switch.

Sounds like it is trying to start engine even though the engine is already on.It does this when I am driving sometimes as well


I would start by inspecting the wiring to the starter, It could be that the signal wire (the wire that activates the starter solenoid) is touching a 12volt power wire. Check the starter relay. It is possible that the relay is old, weak, and is time to replace. Also the ignition switch, check it for proper operation. Pay attention to the way it releases. Try to confirm if it releases properly or if it feels like it is binding or seizing. I hope this helps. Please let me know how this goes and if you need to take your search further. Starter relay wiring for a 1999 chev cav


Skychief2001 is correct.
There should be one wire with a small connector on it that goes to the "s" terminal on the starter (this is the trigger wire that activates the starter solenoid). All the other wires hook up with the large one. The large wire goes directly to the battery, the smaller wires are used to power various other circuits of the car and have nothing to do with the starter itself. It is just an access point for battery power.

My 92 lincoln town car will not start i have replaced the starter, the neutral safety switch and the battery but when i turn key nothing happens but can jump starter and will crank


Yes there is a starter relay in the wiring diagram.
The yellow and lite blue wire goes from the starter solenoid to the relay. There is a yellow wire from the relay to a 30amp fuse. The key switch powers thru the neutral safety switch and then powers the relay on.

I'm rehooking rebuilt starter that somebody else took out, cant see celinoid vary well now. i put posative(larger cable) on it's post cant see neg. does it go on top?


Hi, there is no negative cable on the solenoid. There is a large hot cable from the battery that goes on top. The other cable is the start wire from the ignition switch or relay, and it goes on the smaller "S" terminal, which is usually closest to the engine. If you have a big ground wire there, hook it to the engine or one of the starter mounting bolts. It may be easier to connect the wires before bolting the starter in place. there are 4 wires go to alternator
2 white wires go to battery
1 black wire goes to ground
1 yellow/black goes to bulb check relay
starter has only two wires
the big one goes to the battery and the small one goes to ignition system. you can not mix the terminals because the size of the studs on the starter

94 Firebird 3.4L starter and coil packs dontget power.


There are several issues that could be at work here but let's see if I can help provide a little information as I understand it for your model. Does the dash light up when you turn the key on? You don't indicate if the car has an automatic or manual transmission. Starting with the starter, you apparently have it properly wired including the main ground going to the cylinder block if you can get it to crank by shorting to the solenoid terminal on the starter. There is a yellow wire that comes off of the ignition switch and tees off and goes to a theft deterrent relay and also either a transmission range switch if you have an auto transmission or a clutch start switch if you have a manual. From either of the two switches the yellow wire (or could be brown at this point) then goes again to the theft deterrent relay. There is a purple wire that exits the relay and then goes to the solenoid terminal on the starter. Sorry, I don't know the location of the relay. If you can bypass the relay by connecting the yellow or brown wire to the purple wire and the vehicle then cranks by the ignition switch then the theft deterrent system is causing the problem.

The coil pack gets it's voltage from the #11 10 amp fuse in the under hood electrical center via a pink wire. That fuse will only have voltage when the key is in the on position. It also grounds at a connection with at least 5 other wires, on our 95 firebird it was on a thermostat housing bolt.

Just make sure you have all the ground wires connected and that all the connections are good. A simple test to check for a bad ground is to connect a test light to the ground terminal on the battery and touch the point of your test light to the engine or what ever component ground you want to test and try to power that circuit by either turning on the ignition switch or cranking the engine. If there is a bad ground, your test light will light up bright as it is trying to close the circuit instead of the proper ground path that it should be taking. This test will only be accurate though if you are using a common bulb type test light. Diode test lamps or other low impedence test lamps could give an innaccurate result.

Hope this helps. Just be carefull when shorting starters so you don't have any accidents.
