Question about 1996 Honda Civic

Oxygen sensor Hi, I wa strying to connect an air/fuel ratio guage to my oxygen sensor in my civic and found out that my oxygen sensor isn't connected to anything. How can this work without causing the engine check light to come on? Also...how do i corret the problem so that i can have ma guage working? (the engine is a b20 block with a b18 head)

Somwhere along the lines someone might have installed an oxygen sensor eliminator kit. It basically sends a straight even signal back to the computer to tell it everything is ok. These are often used when people are trying to trick the computer on the vehicle to dump more fuel into the motor. I would check for a wire harness near the sensor that might just have a plug of some sort stuffed into it. If this is not the case, I would have to ask a few questions about the vehicle before I could give a more complete answer.

It may be a faulty oxygen sensor.
For Models 2005 and up:
- Faulty Air Fuel Ratio Sensor 1 Bank 1
- Air Fuel Ratio Sensor 1 Bank 1 circuit is open or shorted
- Air Fuel Ratio Sensor 1 Bank 1 circuit electrical connection

Before you rush off to buy replacement parts it's worth giving a mobile mechanic a call. Those guys are usually very good and far cheaper than a dealership. And a second opinion is worth paying for.

In case the amount of the compensation value is extremely large (The actual mixture ratio is too lean.), the ECM judges the condition as the fuel injection system malfunction and light up the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) (2 trip detection logic).

Replacing the O2 Sensor 1 usually takes care of the problem

I have a 1989 Honda civic just had a rebuild what i thought was a blown head gasket turned out to be holes burned into 2 valves.since the rebuild it soots up the spark plugs bad it flashes codes 1 then 10...

Code 10 Intake Air Temperature (IAT)
Code 14 Idle Air Control (IAC) valve
Sounds like the oxygen sensor (code 1) is recieving more fuel content (or unburned fuel) than it can measure...
The intake air temperature sensor isn't reading within range because...
The Idle air control valve (basically an electronic choke) isn't opening up to allow enough air into the engine to create a clean fuel burn, creating burned valves (probably intake valves) from unburned fuel.

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) monitors the engine Air/Fuel mixture ratio, the actual mixture ratio can be brought closely to the theoretical mixture ratio based on the mixture ratio feedback signal from the heated oxygen sensors 1. The PCM calculates the necessary compensation to correct the offset between the actual and the theoretical ratios. In case the amount of the compensation value is extremely large (The actual mixture ratio is too lean.), the PCM judges the condition as the fuel injection system malfunction and light up the engine light. The codes is usually set when there is an intake leak after the air flow meter, before replacing any parts check for loose or broken hoses and intake gasket leak. On Ford some models dirty air filter, and dirty or faulty air flow sensor are the cause of the problem.

Replacement of o2 sensor


Every new car, and most cars produced after 1980, have an oxygen sensor. The sensor is part of the emissions control system and feeds data to the engine management computer. The goal of the sensor is to help the engine run as efficiently as possible and also to produce as few emissions as possible.
A gasoline engine burns gasoline in the presence of oxygen (see How Car Engines Work for complete details). It turns out that there is a particular ratio of air and gasoline that is "perfect," and that ratio is 14.7:1 (different fuels have different perfect ratios -- the ratio depends on the amount of hydrogen and carbon found in a given amount of fuel). If there is less air than this perfect ratio, then there will be fuel left over after combustion. This is called a rich mixture. Rich mixtures are bad because the unburned fuel creates pollution. If there is more air than this perfect ratio, then there is excess oxygen. This is called a lean mixture. A lean mixture tends to produce more nitrogen-oxide pollutants, and, in some cases, it can cause poor performance and even engine damage.
The oxygen sensor is positioned in the exhaust pipe and can detect rich and lean mixtures. The mechanism in most sensors involves a chemical reaction that generates a voltage (see the patents below for details). The engine's computer looks at the voltage to determine if the mixture is rich or lean, and adjusts the amount of fuel entering the engine accordingly.
The reason why the engine needs the oxygen sensor is because the amount of oxygen that the engine can pull in depends on all sorts of things, such as the altitude, the temperature of the air, the temperature of the engine, the barometric pressure, the load on the engine, etc.
When the oxygen sensor fails, the computer can no longer sense the air/fuel ratio, so it ends up guessing. Your car performs poorly and uses more fuel than it needs to.

Check engine light


Sometimes can be prematurely dirty air filter, sets off the air flow sensor, which sets off the o2 sensor. So might try new air filter first and erase codes and then see, before you spend more bucks than you need; then if codes return, do the flow mix sensor.
