no,i was thinking egr valve but i didnt even think of an air flow problem.seems to run ok once it gets going,is that common with air flow sensors?

I am running a 3.1 V6. The vehicle starts fine and idles normally. As I depress the accelerator I begin to move, and as I press the pedal a little further, I get hesitation until I push it down even farther and the hesitation disappears. Would this also indicate a MAF sensor problem? I do know that the previous owner replaced the idle position sensor, if that helps at all.

Yes your symptom fits a failing MAF sensor (Mass Air Flow), you could try spraying carb spray through the sensor screen, maybe the heated wire has dirt on it and is causing a faulty signal.

Lexus SC430 Stalling Problem

Check the EVAP system canister purge valve, usually located on or near the canister itself which should be near the fuel tank. If the valve is clogged or stuck, it will cause excessive backpressure in the vapor return system, which sounds like what is happening here. Good luck, hope this helps.

My 1994 Plymouth Sundance has been hesitating for a while. I added Gumout fuel ststem cleaner at last fill. Yesterday and today the problem has worsened. It will randomly hesitate/sputter, especially when...

start with a new fuel filter and air filter. and quite likely you have some crud in the tank that is not helping perhaps a new fuel pump and tank are in order too. sorry to say ... but cars are evil and will turn on you when you can least afford to fix them.
