Question about 1997 Saturn SL

1999 Saturn SL light green slim/sludge found in water

I suspect oil is leaking into the water...we've changed the oil a couple times now, and have not been able to detect any water in the oil....but for over a month or so now, we've noticed a thick slim/sludge in the water resevoir. I've taken it off and cleaned it, and flushed as much as I could out of the hoses/radiator twice now. Is this indicative of a cracked block/head? Wasn't quite sure, since we've not been able to see any water in the oil/changes. The car isn't blowing smoke, or leaking oil/water. Any ideas on how to narrow it down/find exactly where the problem is?

hmm..ok...cause car runs just fine otherwise...can't detect any compression leaks, or external seepage from the gasket area.

I have a 1993 Saturn SOHC 1.9 that is doing the same thing.

I've already had the head gasket changed, and the mechanic said he didn't see anything wrong with it, cleaned it up and put it back togrther, after about 20 miles the oil was all back in the water resivor. asked another mechanic and he said that if the head is cracked that he wouldn't have seen anything wrong.

So I ordered a rebuilt head and had him install it, while I observed. By the hayne's book he did everything right. 18 miles and it is doing the same thing.

I had a water pump installed before this all started and I am now trying to see if there is anything wrong in that area.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Also there is a hole in the block where the water pump mounts that seems to go diagnal toward the drivers area. The gasket has provisions for the hole so its suppose to be there, I'm wondering what its for and where its going?

If you are sure it is oil then yes you most likely have a blown head gasket.

The leak will be internal, have a shop see if the radiator has combustion gases leaking into it.

I have a 1998 Saturn. The reservoir often leaks water/antifreeze and light comes on to indicate. I have had water pump as well as reservoir replaced. Doesn't leak everday but still leaks. WHat is this?...

you need to find that leak, is the leak visible? if its not from radiator or the reservoir, the only other place I could think you can lose water is the head gasket. It happens to high miles and hard driver. 100k miles would likely be a head gasket. Leaking head gasket will also cause the engine temperature to rise and run super hot. antifreeze will leak through the head gasket down to your oil pan mixing oil and water. Check your oil by pulling the dip stick and see if you have oil mix with water; it will have a slimy looking colors, oil is light color and it should never be black. if it black than change your oil and inspect it afterward when the car has been running for while. when engine really hot cause the heat to effect the starter not to engage or start or engine is too hot to run. repairing head gasket could run anywere from 500-800 bucks.

How do I change the time on my 1999 Saturn SL-2?

I believe you need to press and hold the volume/power knob on the radio then push the tune button - you'll notice small words under the different sides of the button for "hr" and "min"

1999 Saturn SW2. High coolant temp and transaxle warning light comes on intermittant. Auto trans. Runs and sounds fine. Any idea of the cause/cure?

check the tranny fluid. if it's dark brown it and the filter should be changed. they can do this at most oil change places. but it could be as simple as some loose sensor wires. hope this helps.
don't forget to add 50% water and coolant to your resevoir tank of your coolant when it's low.

There is heavy oil sludge in the coolant but it shows no coolant in the oil. I removed the thermostat and flushed out the cooling system for over an hour to clean it out. In nless than 1500 miles it is...

I have the same problem with a renault kangoo diesel , black thick oil in coolant --nice clean oil in motor , you have an oil cooler leaking oil into the cooling system , replace the oil cooler , I have not been able to get the black sludge out of the coolant internal parts , heater is blocked too , I thought of using kerosene to break down the sludge , but worry it might damage the hoses and they are not cheap, good luck

1999 Saturn SL Sun Roof Leaks when it rains

Great solution: Use a 8 foot length of weed eater plastic "blade". You can get a small amount from a hardware supply store. While twisting the strand, insert it into your drains that are located in the corners of your open sunroof hole. Feed the plastic thru the tubing... don't force it, use gentle pressure. Test with a bit of water and look under the car for drainage.
