Question about Chevrolet Corvette

1 Answer

1986 corvette. auto (700r4) I am having trouble with a fusible link. there is a distrubution block with several fusible links attached. I have repaired these as needed. there were two fusible links near the top of the battery. one WAS connected. it was hanging off the top, it led back to the distribution block. the second was connected to the acc wire off the battery cable. this one get VERY hot after i start the engine. when it breaks the connection, the car wont start, but the starter still operates. I suspect that the entire load for the interior ecm is being fed through this thin link. live in south mississipi carlos

When replacing fusible links, the wire must be cut after the large black plastic/rubber. (where the fusible wire has ended and the hard wire begins).
Don't forget to buy suitable wire connectors, yes its that important!

cutting and joining old and a new fusible links could cause weird connection problems.

I have since replaced most of the old fusible link that was dry rotted or spliced incorrectly.

No lights 1986 nissan

Check fuses, check light switch and relays. This sounds like a no power issue so check fuses first. The light switch turns on or activatves relays which the power or voltabe to the lights .

Battery terminal

Run a heavy gauge wire off the starter solenoid,
to a new terminal block you use for any add on
things & leave the battery cables factory stock

Something like an 8 gauge or 10 gauge wire

Do the math on your total amperage, that your adding,
for the wire & fusible link size

Also use a fusible link coming into the new terminal
block to protect all your adding down stream

Put new battery in 89 corvette now will not turn over

THERE IS A NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH ON THE SHIFT LEVER, UNDER THE PLASTIC. THE PURPLE WIRE & OR THE YELLOW WIRE SHOULD HAVE POWER WHEN YOU TUN THE KEY TO START. THERE IS A ANTI THEFT MODULE BEHIND RIGHT SIDE OF DASH THAT MAY OR NOT BE A PROBLEM. THE TROUBLE MAY BE A BLOWN FUSIBLE LINK WIRE. THERE IS AT LEAST ONE AT THE STARTER, SOME AT THE POS. BATTERY TERM. SOME AT THE JUMP START JUNCTION. THESE THINGS ARE SHORT WIRES, THAT ACT AS FUSES. THEY ARE USUALLY THICK INSULATION, SMALL WIRE INSIDE. PULL ON THEM ONE AT A TIME IF THEY STRETCH OR COME APART THERE IS THE PROBLEM. REPAIR OR REPLACE AS NEEDED. I WOULD START WITH THE FUSIBLE LINK AT THE STARTER.

700r4 keeps shirting in and out of overdrive

This year has a small valve that senses pressure from the pump and lets the trans. lock into overdrive. You can find a new one at Jegs or Summit. Yours is dirty or has gotten weak. Yes you can change it your self. Do a internet search for TCI 200R4 / 700R4 Torque Converter Lock-Up Kit.

What transmission is in a 1990 corvette?I think it is a 700r4?and if yes will any 700r4 fit ?

No there are different 700R4 transmission, well that not quite true. The 700R4 had many jobs to matted to Corvettes to SUVs, the internals are where the differences were in the 700R4 such as the servo's and boost valve which can be easily replaced. Best thing to do is to got to a Transmission shop that can build a transmissions for your Corvette or buy a replacement 700R4 for your year of Corvette. That is why the shift points and firmness are different in a Corvette then a Cadillac while they both have 700R4 in the 1990's. Be bad for a Corvette to shift like Grandma's Cadillac going to play dingo. Good luck and hope this helps.

My dad seems to have done some damage to his electrical system. He started his 1986 F250, 460 CI after being down for over a year. It started and then ran for a few minutes. He came back out to the...

Keep in mind that ford kept their electrical systems pretty simple. You might want to pick up a solenoid on the way. Typically, the engine compartment master relay block controls llighting and ignition. Good chance he burnt the link during the short. Get a decent voltmeter and start at battery out.

79 chevy k10 starter problems

Fusible Links

The engine compartment wiring harness has several fusible links. The same size wire with a special hypalon insulation must be used when replacing a fusible link.
The links are located in the following areas:
  1. A molded splice at the starter solenoid Bat terminal, a 14 gauge red wire.
  2. A 16 gauge red fusible link at the junction block to protect the unfused wiring of 12 gauge or larger wire. This link stops at the bulkhead connector.
  3. The alternator warning light and field circuitry is protected by a 20 gauge red wire fusible link used in the battery feed to voltage regular #3 terminal. The link is installed as a molded splice in the circuit at the junction block.
  4. The ammeter circuit is protected by two 20 gauge fusible links installed as molded splices in the circuit at the junction block and battery to starter circuit.
Other things it MIGHT be are the ignition switch, located on top of the steering column:

The other thing it MIGHT be is a faulty ignition cylinder (where your key goes into to start the K10).

Check the wire harness on the steering column also.

1986 chevy corvette service engine light

the light can be reset by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes, but the light is telling you there is a problem in the electronic controls of the engine, until that problem is fixed the light will continue to come on. Here is how u test the system for the trouble codes that are stored whenever the check engine light comes on. Go to the link for instructions on how to retrieve codes.
