Question about Ford Escort

1 Answer

My 1991 Ford Escort GT has been hesitating for the last couple weeks, particularly at low RPMs, and then last night while it sat idling in my driveway, it slowed down, started shaking, then stopped altogether. When I tried to restart it immediately, the engine would turn over, but never start. After waiting about 10 minutes, and putting in another gallon of gas, I tried again. It idled for about 2-3 minutes, then when I started to pull it out of the driveway, it stopped again. I thought it might be the spark plugs, but now I'm thinking it could be the timing belt? What should I do to check and fix it?

Check the timing, if it is way off the belt has jumped and the cam is out of time, also are there any burn marks on the insulators of the spark plug wires that go down into the head?? that is a common problem, If the car is a hig miler then replace the wires with a high quality set, don't use cheapo wire sets. One other thing make sure the rubber intake hose is properly connect to the MAF sensor and intake throttle body and has no cracks or leaks

98 escort high idle

check for vaccuum leaks.. try spraying brake cleaner around the lines and see if it changes anything with the idle spped.. if it sucks in some it will chug while you spray it.. That helps locate a leak..

Throttle hesitation

If you have no vacuum leaks, the injectors could be clogging up (winter gas or old gas can cause that) or the throttlebody may need cleaning. Use the correct cleaner that is O2 sensor safe! Also ensure the air filter is clean.

My car surges some times

Follow this procedure for these kinds of problems.

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

1999 Ford Escort idle problems

PVC valve is not metering air correctly, it will appear ok shaking it but looses it ability to maintain proper position causing a medium to gross vacuum leak.

Quite possible idle speed control valve. Take it off and give a good clean. Its more than likely oiled up and a bit sticky.
