Hello dodge cummins owner i myself have a 98 dodge ram 1500 5.9L truck and i just recently had to rebuild my transmission. my truck would go fine in reverse but would not move in forward. when i took the trany apart i found out that the clutchs were completely gone. but in order to rebuild your trany i would sugest in getting a shop repair manual. i had purchased a shift kit for 400 dollars and it came with all the clutchs that i needed and that is much cheaper than buying a tranny or even haveing a shop work on it. the shop wanted 1500 dollars to rebuild it and to buy a new tranny it was over 2000 dollars.

Your reverse gear is damaged most likely need a transmission rebuild. I would recommend going to a good salvage yard. Do this go online look for used transmission with a warranty they are out there.

Auto transmission clunking noise when putting into reverse & foward or taking out

the noise is the free play in the side gears of the diff and is normal in a diff that has some miles
there is a problem if the pinion moves forward or back when turning the shaft
check for "U" joints as if they are failing you will get the noise when changing direction
other areas to check are suspension rubbers and transmission rubber mounts

Sounds like a problem in the valve body control, or the vacuum control of the valve body.
The vacuum control leak could cause the grinding noise because it didn't actuate far enough when trying to engage reverse.
In either case this is something for a transmission shop to handle.

You said you had it rebuilt. Did they rebuild the transmission you had? Or did they just swap it with a rebuilt they already had on the shelf?
My first call would be to them to see what the warranty coverage was from the last repair. My guess would be that it might not be, but it could, it's worth a shot.

Let us know what they say.
