Amongst other things, this is a symptom of a bad coil. For the low cost of changing it, it is worth a try. Please post your results.

1990 Volkswagon Jetta won't turn back on after long drive.

Then you have a start up problem and it reside with the cold start valve,The cold start valve operates even if the vehicle is warmed up,the cold start valve can be plugged up,or even have a bad connection,The cold start valve operates by a thermotime switch. This switch located on the near bottom of the radiator may have gone bad or disconnected,Here is the easy cost effective route, replace them both,it will cost more to trouble shoot it than just replace it.

Runs great , until it warms up then starts idle plop plop plop plop plop as long as i give it gas it runs great i knock out the converter and took the muffler off , sanded the cap and checked the button

Hi, make sure you do not have an injector stuck open, as it will dump gas constantly. Also make sure your ignition coil is not arcing, causing a spark loss. last, your coolant temp sensor,(next to the thermostat), may be bad. when they go bad, or are unhooked, it can make the computer read -40 degrees, and make the engine run rich, smoke, and sputter. Good luck...Coop

Have you checked the fuel pressure regulator for leaks into the intake

It turns over like its out of gas but it has more than a half of

It is dieseling, there is an air leak in the intake circuitry allowing the motor to get enough fuel/air to run using the hot carbon or metal in the compression chamber to act like a spark plug.
If it's carbureted adjust the idle screw, if it's injected there is a faulty injector or sensor.

check all of the vaccum lines and the one behind the throttle body also try some STP gas treatment and if this helps replace your fuel filter also make sure you have at less a half tank of gas before you add the STP.

Runs poorly while warming up

auto choke controled by the hot water system, sounds like someone has disconnected the pipes somewhere along the line as they were leaking,on or around the carb should be a round thing with two water pipes and inside is a bi-metal strip, which is most likely working but with no water through it or through the inlet manifold to preheat the petrol vapour hence your problem.soloution buy a small engined europen type vehiclelike a kangoo or berlingo and recycle the gas guzzler you have now.
