Question about 2005 Ford F-150

Terrible Ratlling from the Engine

Driving down highway and my 2005 Ford F-150 started rattling so I put it in nuetral and shut off the engine and coasted to safety.  Got towed to ford dealership and they checked it out.  Told me worst case scenario would cost me $5,500 for a new engine.  I don't have an extend warranty and only 56,000 miles.  Is there any help for me.

Friend said he was behind me and he even heard the terrible loud internal rattling and also said he saw smoke come out of the exhaust.  Also recently, a couple of times it seemed it wanted to die when you pulled up to a stop sign and also seemed to do the same thing especially when the air condioning was on.

I have the same problem. Was driving along and the check engine light came on and started running rough, like the fuel filter was stopped up. I replaced the fuel filter myself ($10) and it didn't help. White smoke and fuel smell from the exhaust. Hauled it to the dealerhsip and later that day they called saying that they replaced the fuel injector (covered under a mfg extended warrenty for that same problem). The dealer noticed a loud ticking/ratlling sound from the engine and said it could be a piston, but would need a new engine ($5,700). The new engine comes with a 3-year, 100K mile warrenty. ???? How come a new engine comes with a better warranty than the original engine that came in the truck????? I have 75k miles and now looking at replacing the engine (no warranty). I've Google'd this problem and have seen many other 2005 F150's with the same problem. Why hasn't this made it into a Recall yet?

ok was the smoke a grey or blue? if it was either of those colors than what is happening is your oil is getting past your valves and into you exaust. you might be able to get by with it for a few days but i really recomend that you either look for a new truck or you might take it to another shop and have them do a test on it to see if doing a valve job would help.

What could be causing my f-150 to smell and white smoke coming from engine after driving it at highway speeds and feeling like towing heavy load? 3 different shops and no one knows what's causing it?

Most people associate white smoke as a blown head gasket but I had a Ford that was dumping fuel and it had heavy white smoke and stunk out the exhaust. It had bad injectors. Let your mechanic read your fuel trims on his scanner after a long highway drive. Or do a fuel leak down test on them to know for sure.

Why does my 2009 dodge grand caravan shut off while I'm driving?

I had a similar problem with my 2002 Ford F-150. It turned out to be a loose battery terminal cable. I don't know if that's your problem but worth looking into it.

Shuts off while driving on the highway. I pull over put it in park and it starts right back up

Do you get a trouble indication?
Ford products have Coils On Plugs that are problematic. I have a 2005 Lincoln and had the same problem (only my dash light came on); it cost me $1500 to have all of my COP's replaced. You should get check engine that will tell them which one is bad.
You don't have to put the car in park to reset the system, just put in Neutral, shut engine off, restart, put car in Drive.

Noise at shut down

The noise is caused by the engine running on after the ignition is shut off. It makes noise because the pistons are rattling in the cylinders from incorrect timing. This has nothing to do with the mechanical or electronic timing of the engine. The engine runs on either because of hot glowing carbon deposits in the cylinder head or because the engine was shut down when it was running too fast. Sometimes the carbon can be literally blown out by running the engine at high rpm for a short time. Put it in second gear and run it for a couple of miles on the highway. If this does not work the heads will have to be removed and the carbon cleaned out manually. The shut down when running too fast problem can be caused by the idle being set too high or by shutting the engine off before it has reached idle speed. If you can adjust the idle speed try reducing it. If not always hesitate before shutting the engine down to let it reach idle speed. Good Luck!
