I had the same problem on my 96 Cavalier and it ended up being something so stupid. With me, the latch to open it from inside would get stuck in the open position after pulling and needed to be pushed back down so that the trunk would remain closed. It wasnt blatently obvious as it was barely stuck up, but it was enough to prevent locking. Hope your problem is as easy to fix as mine was!

1995 chev. caprise license plate light goes out when trunk is closed.... has been working fine since 1995

hi.

sounds like you either have weak springs in the bulb holders and the bulb moves when you close the trunk, or a loose/broken wire that is being disturbed when you close the trunk.
check the bulbs are secure and tight, and check any wires near any part of the trunk that moves when it is closed, including hinges, springs, and the lock mechanism, as well as any wires connecting the trunk to the car

My trunk on my 2005 Acura TL will not pop up. When I closed it I heard a clinging noise, the trunk is very heavy when opened manually. What might this be? Shock? Spring?

There's a longsteel rod on the roof of your trunk that goes from one trunk hinge to the other and it acts like a spring when your trunk lever is pulled. Sounds like it broke on one side.

Vw 2006 passat trunk won't close

this always happens to my 06 passat when its really cold, im talking 0 or lower. i try not to open the trunk in the winter if i can help it. Its annoying but in the summer i have no problems. I have herd of alot of other people having this problem, VW knows about it and dosnt think its a recall item for somereason, look for your fancy gas door to not open next, i know of 3 people that started having trunk problems and then the fuel door stopped working, not sure if it has anything to do with it or not. but It happend to me and now i have the auto fuel door disconnected from the inside of the trunk.
The trunk issue isnt anything big to worry about it seems intermittent. I found latches and there a little pricey thats why i just deal with it.

Trunk on 2006 jetta won't close! the only way my husband has gotten it to work is to lock the doors and this still takes a few slams of the trunk!

this is a known problem. The spring inside the latch is a tad short/weak and over time has a hard time returning the latch mechanism. This is a link to the solution for an easy at home repair.

Trunk will not latch?? or stay shut

I bought some grease and sprayed all the trunk latch pieces but then I found out the problem. On the bottom part of the latch [not the lid but the attached part] there is a spring that has a rubber pad that has to be compressed when the lid closes to completely latch. I noticed the side of the latch on the trunk lid had scratches from the latch slipping past the rubber pad on the spring. The solution was easy. I took a screw driver and wedged the padded area so it would make direct contact and now it latches just fine.
