No, you have to drain all the gas from the system using a compressor. change pump, then pump all the gas back in and top up.

If you don't care about being green, just unscrew the 2 main pipes on the compressor. Change pump, screw pipes up. Then find a garage that will gas you up cheaply.

BEWARE: if you run the car without gas (AC gas that is) disconnect the clutch wire from the pump. Or it might burn out again.

In UK you came be re gassed for as low as £40($75).

I don't know about US, should be cheaper (you guys have more cars with AC)

Philip

My ac clutch will not engage on my 1999 ford expedition

It sounds like it's either out of freon, or compressor oil. You can pick up a can of refrigerant that has the oil in with it at any Autozone or Advance Auto. It'll have the pressure gauge and fill hose with a coupler already on it. Hook it up with the engine running and a/c turned on...compressor should kick on pretty quickly. Hope this does the trick for ya!

How to turn off air compressor on 1999 ford expedition

  • Under the hood in the relay panel will be a relay for the compressor. When you locate the relay box look on the underside of the lid for the legend (layout) of the relays. Pulling that relay will stop the compressor from turning on.
  • You can also just unhook the connector on the compressor and secure it to stop the compressor from turning on.
  • If you need the compressor clutch to not turn at all, like if the bearings are bad, then you need to buy a smaller belt to bypass the compressor all together.

  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

I have a 1999 ford expedition and my ac is not cold! I checked fuses and they all seem fine. The ac is blowing but its not cold! How can I tell if its the compressor? Could it just be the a/c clutch...

Hi Kaseyloe, I think that the first thing you should have inspected is the AC gas pressure. If its leaked out, the unit won't run. The clutch of the compressor won't activate. Best take it to a refrigeration company and have them check it for you.

I have a 1999 Ford Expedition, Eddie Bauer. The ac compressor clutch will not kick in when useing the climate control. The system is fully charege. I ran power directly to the comperssor and the clutch...

Check the high and low pressure switches, either switch can cause the compressor not to run. Look for the switches in the high and low side lines. Hope this helps, let me know.

My 2002 Expedition air conditioner will sometimes blow hot air and others cold air

I would check the following possibilities:
1. Is compressor clutch working? - You need to do this when the ac is blowing hot air only - locate compressor drive pulley on engine - rubber belt wraps around it. Start engine and set to max ac. When the ac is blowing hot air, look at the center of the compressor drive pulley using a good flash light - watch it for a while, it should be spinning with the pulley - this means the compressor is engaged. If not, the compressor is not engaged. If your ac is blowing hot air, then the compressor should be engaged and running (trying to cool). If it is not engaged, then your compressor clutch is probably going out. Could be low voltage to clutch, but more likely the clutch is worn out and only working some of the time. Note: if working normally, the compressor clutch will engage and disengage in cycles- but the air should always be cold. If clutch is bad, compressor would need to be replaced (sold as one unit). This is tricky to diagnose and could take some time - you need to do it when ac is blowing hot air but set to max cooling.

2. Low on refrigerant or refrigerant has moisture in it? If your ac blows cold initially after being off for a while, then heats up, and continues to regularly cycle back and forth between hot and cool air, then the system may be low on refrigerant or the refrigerant may have moisture in it that is freezing and restricting refrigerant flow. An a/c shop can check refrigerant level and even replace refrigerant if moisture is suspected.

Could be other issues, but I would start with these.

Good luck

BAD BEARINGS ON AC CLUTCH ON A 2000 DODGE DURANGO

Buy a whole new clutch for about $200. You need a special puller to remove the old one if you intend to refurbish it. It's not worth the effort. Just remove the clips and knock the old one off with a hammer. Chuck it away and replace with a brand new clutch assembly.

Chek compresser fuse. Feel the front of the compressor while car is off and see if the compressor clutch moves by hand. If it does not move by hand, You will need a new compressor, if it does move freely by hand it is a compresser fuse blown

AC problem

Sounds like the bearing and clutch went out. Its best to replace the compressor, unless you got the tools and knowhow to chg. the clutch and bearing. If you just chg. out the compressor, the refregerent has to be drained out first, and then unbolt lines on back of compressor, and electrical wires, and belt, and bolts then remove. Put new compressor on in reverse order. But system should be vacumed be for its recharged with refregerent.
