The linkage may have come disconnected inside the tailgate. Remove the carpet from the tailgate by firmly pulling it outward around the entire edge (it just pops on). Then remove the screws securing the metal plate over the opening, and carefully remove the plastic sheet (if you tear it, it can be replaced with simple construction grade plastic sheeting). You should be able to see the rod that connects to the handle. Verify that both the linkage for the lock and the handle are clipped in place. For comparison, look at whichever rod is connected, there should a plastic clip that rotates in place to prevent the rod from coming out of the hole. The handle will not work unless both of these rods are connected (the lock disengages the handle mechanism entirely when in the locked position).

Rear door latch will not open handle seems to have insufficient travel to free mechanism

Try pressing your left hand against the tailgate opening handle assembly (black plastic around the pull handle) while at the same time pulling on the handle to open it. I believe the entire assembly is being pulled out and you have to press on it, to hold it in place, while pulling on the handle. Make sure to hit open on the power lock a few times before trying this. Good luck.

My 2004 Toyota Sequoia rear door will not open - the handle is broken. How do I get into the door, whith it closed, to make the necessary repairs?

Dig out the broken bits of door handle, then on the right side insert a flat head screwdriver diagonally up and fish around for the release lever.
Push up on the screwdriver handle to manipulate the release lever down and your tailgate will open.
Remove the interior panels by unbolting the 10mm bolt behind the strap and pulling off the interior pieces held on by plastic pop fasteners.
Remove the 10mm bolts around the perimeter of the interior cover plate and let it hang by the harness.
Remove the license plate.
Remove the license plate trim panel (multiple push fasteners from behind and a few 10mm around the lock)
Replace the handle.

Subaru Forester tailgate lock open, but stuck in "locked"

The problem I have found many times is the Handle on outside not returning all the way. That makes the lock not release. Check to make sure you push the handle all the way back to the closed position. I have to spray lube on the edges of the hndle every couple months to free it for my wife. Good Luck and have a great day.

Door (tailgate) won't open...the handle extends but doesn't open

there is a lever that the handle slides into on the latch. the lever over time bends and the handle doesn't pull on it. try pulling on an angle either to the left or right. you might need a new latch as the lever is part of the latch.

2005 dadge dakota tailgate wont open

You can access it from the inside of the tail gate, there is a plate directly on the other side of the handle,Just take that plate off and reattach the rod mount or replace the handle if it's broken.

2003 Toyota Sequoia Tailgate Latch - how to replace

Remove your tag bolts and remove the cover by pulling easy as not to break the tabs. The tag lights can but do not have to come out. At this point you can access the handle. You will find that the handle has a plastic arm that trips the latch by pulling a cable it will be broken. To open the door just pull on the cable. Once I open the door I removed the inside door panel and a metal cover which has about 8 10mm bolts it gives you more room to work.
