1999 DODGE Dakota abs & brake light are on and brake pedal goes right to the floor but the vehicle does stop at slow speed

  • Anonymous Mar 11, 2011

Thank-you for the help; upon some further crawling around under the truck in the snow and slush I finally found a corrosion hole in the main line on the frame under the drivers door.

Sounds as if there might be a brake fluid leak somewhere in the system.check the master cylinder to see if the brake fluid is low or almost empty,if the fluid is up then it could be a master cylinder that has an internal leak(meaning the fluid is leaking past the internal seals but not leaking out of the cylinder).it also can be a problem with the abs hydraulic control module leaking.you should have the abs system checked for any codes in that system which may help find the problem quicker,if you don`t find any problem with the other suggestions

2002 Dodge Dakota club, 3.9 auto. Brake pedal is soft, brakes but no resistance, pedal almost to floor. Changed booster and master cylinder, same issue

You have air trapped in the braking system somewhere. Have you bled the system thoroughly at all four wheels?
Have you changed the front calipers recently. Many years ago, I helped a friend mount new calipers on his vehicle, and we put the new calipers on the wrong side -- right one on the left side and vice versa. In this configuration, the bleeder screw wound up on the lower portion of the caliper instead of at the top, where it needs to be to allow trapped air to come out. Just a thought.

1999 dodge dakota Abs light on and e-brake light on. Speedometer doesn't read untill 25 mph

The speed sensor that controls the speedometer is located in the top of the rear differential housing, this is your most likely problem and is very common with this vehicle. Being that it is a direct input to the ABS module it will cause those indicators to illuminate when the sensor fails.

I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota that will not lock up the brakes. Everything has been replaced and it coasts to a stop. The pedel goes to the floor at full stop . Master cyl, prop valve, new lines, and...

Master cylinter is shot is my first thought. if it has been replaced with a referb.. replace it again. make sure you bench bleed the master cylinder before putting it on.. if it's new, you have a ton of air in the lines.. bleed the pass rear first/ drivers rear/ pass front/ pass rear.. FYI your brakes/ tires should never lock up, you have ABS.

How do you bleed the master cylinder

this vehicle has ABS brakes (anto-lock) brakes with a computer that controls it. When you bleed the brakes on your vehicle the fluid goes through the ABS computer. If you don't have a pressure bleeder & the knowlage I wouldn't attempt this. You could cause air lock which will cause you brake pedal to go to the floor & not stop the car. Take it to an ABS brake licensed repair shop.

ABS and Brake light stay on plus pedal is soft after tight turn

sounds like you have low brake fluid pressure and the pressure sensor is turning on warning lights saying there is low pressure and also pedal going to floor indicate this, sounds like master brake cylinder is worn out/broke and needs replace ment

Dodge Dakota overdrive and ABS/brake problem

The problem could be in your differential. If the ABS traction ring has any defects in the teeth, the rear wheel speed sensor will stop registering and disable your ABS.
This may not resolve your transmission concern, but it may answer your ABS/Brake light problem.
