When in traffic and the heat gauge gets halfway then the idling gets intermitent and actually jerks around when idling.captiva 2007 2.4 south africa

That's just your computer thinking the engine is overheating and it's only placing it in what they call "Limp Home Mode".You just need to address the heat rise situation,it should not rise.Thermostat cares for that.Thermostat could be sticking and staying too far to the closed side.Replace the thermostat(V-6 can be hard to get to one bolt head but can be done with a box-end 12point wrench)and be patient with it.

I bought a brand new Mazda Etude 180ise (2000 model). For the last 6 years I have continually struggled with idling problems. It cuts out, threatens to die on you, recovers, runs well for a fortnight and...

You can clean these with brake cleaner or something comparable. Brake cleaner doesn't leave a residue. If it is mounted directly to the throttle body, then clean all of it. Start the car rev it up and spray it in, Keep the rpm's high enough so not to kill the engine. You don't have to use the entire can. Fords are the same way, the start to run bad because the MAF gets contaminated with oil and dust, spray them off and all is good till next time. Just a note.... Never use a brush or anything on the MAF, as you said they are very sensitive

Will not idle at one speed wants to surge and hunt around

check the ohm rating on all plug wires. They average 28,000 ohms per foot. Of course a bad spark plug can be at fault to. These two items will cause your tack to fluctuate or hunt while idling

Idling hunts by around 300RPM when car is hot. (working temp.)

try cleaning the throttle body first then if that dont work you will need to replce the iac motor wich is located on the bottom of the throttle body your car is hunting for the correct idle position and either the sensor inside the iac motor is dirty or it is bad
