Since you have never done any mechanical work before, I suggest you get yourself a haynes or chilton manual (around $20.) and read the instructions for that repair. Thermostats used to be a fairly easy repair but for the past several years, manufacturers have started moving them to all kinds of strange and difficult to reach locations.
Read the manual and look at what the job may entail. If you are comfortable with what you see, then do it, otherwise have a shop do it for you. Buying the manual you can use it to do many other repairs, so it's never a bad thing to have!!! Make sure the engine is cold before doing anything though so you don't get burned!!!
Good Luck!

2003 sunfire 2.2 ecotec engine, fans working, hoses building pressure replaced thermostat but still over heating

Thermostat installed correctly? in backwards? low on coolent? Clogged coolent passageways, might want to flush system and refill. Too much antifreeze/not enough water will cause this also.

Where is the thermostat on a 1998 Pontiac Sunfire??

Follow the hose that runs down from the fill tank and you will see it turn and run it a medal peace and that is where it is located. 2 bolts and removing a clamp is all it takes to remove it
