My 1998 Ford Expedition has been reading Cold then suddenly shoots to Hot and stays there. There truck then rides like I'm in 2nd gear and has no pick-up what so ever. When I give it gas the pressure forces the coolant out from the reservior cap spraying antifreeze all over. I have replaced the sensors (2) (one is the reader and the other is the sensor), the thermostat, and the cap. My mechanic has no idea what it could be.

It was the water pump. they replaced the water pump and now it runs ok... but from what i hear it could only be 4 things... thermostat, water pump, or head gasket, or your car may not really be over heating and has a bad sensor...this is a problem where it will be easy for a mechanic to take advantage of a customer. they claim it was the water pump but i think it was the sensor. they charged me $360. i felt like i got robbed because the pump only cost like $60 and i had someone who would have done it for $80. now im having problems with my assing gear. i cannot floor this thing for nothing but it picks up when i let off of the gas.

Can I tow a 2005 ford expedition 4x4 behind my motorhome without any modifications?

It is not recomended to flat tow your expedition with the engine off and driveshaft in. The oiling system in your transmission runs off of the engine. You can tow short distances but the transmission components will be turning without fresh fluid being moved through them. This will cause exessive wear due to the fluid overheating and losing its ability to lubricate properly. You can flat tow unlimited distances with the engine ideling or the driveshaft removed. if you chose to tow with the engine running you should stop often to make sure you are not overheating the engine. You may not get enough air flow to the radiator while the expedition is behind your motor home.

Expedition overheated this morning. Haven't been driven and sat out in cold weather. Could this damage my engine? Running pretty bad right now.

If it keeps overheating, it can cause major damage. You need to check your coolant fluid in the engine. Make sure your fans are kicking on properly. Check those and let me know what happened. We are here to help and we will try our best to give you accurate information to fix your vehicle. Thank you for using FixYa. Anymore questions, just contact me back. Best wishes.

1998 ford expedition 4.6 engine without tow package...overheating

If you're running it without a thermostat it's clear there isn't enough/any coolant circulating through the block. When the motor is running are the hoses off the radiator soft and flexible or stiff. If they're soft there's no coolant flowing through them. Chances are the radiator core is bad or there is a crack in it somewhere. Have it removed and tested.

Reset the check engine light on 2005 Expedition

you have to take it to a shop to have it reset. if it tripped, it means something isn't working right, and that often leads to lower gas mileage if it isn't fixed, costing more money in the long term

If you gutted the cats it would emit a lot of bad emissions and a check engine light would definitely come on. I would try to clean the mass air flow sensor.
